PhD Student Position in Public Economics

The KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich is the leading institute for applied research in economics in Switzerland. KOF conducts rigorous and independent research on both the Swiss and international economy, addressing structural and economic policy issues of social significance.

Job Description

The PhD position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) through the project “The Economics of Inheritance and Inter-Vivos Gifts.” This project is led by Dr. Isabel Z. Martínez at ETH and Prof. Marius Brülhart at the University of Lausanne, with contributions from associated researchers Aurélien Eyquem and Enrico Rubolino from HEC Lausanne and CREST Paris.

The project will explore topics related to inheritance flows, inter-vivos gifts, bequest motives, and taxation. As a PhD candidate, you will engage in all stages of research, from data cleaning to analysis, result visualization, and drafting a final research paper.

The position is based at the KOF Institute at ETH Zurich. During your PhD, you will be integrated into institutional activities and participate in regular team meetings, working closely with project leaders and other team members to produce high-quality research suitable for academic publication. The position is intended for a duration of 4 years, with an optimal starting date of September 2026.

Profile

The ideal candidate for this position:

  • Is passionate about research that addresses real-world challenges. You have completed your degree with excellent grades and possess the potential to perform high-quality research with an eye for detail, caring about the societal impact of your work.
  • Excels in quantitative reasoning. You have received robust training in statistics and causal inference, and you are proficient in Stata. You understand the limitations and capabilities of data and have a demonstrated interest in applied econometrics.
  • Holds a Master's degree in Economics. You have a strong interest in topics related to public economics, inequality, taxation, and labor economics at the time of appointment.
  • Presents excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills. You enjoy collaboration, possess a compelling writing style in English, and utilize effective visualizations to convey statistical insights. While not mandatory, knowledge of German and/or French will be considered an asset.
