Job Opportunity: Laboratory Technician

The Laboratory of Ecosystems and Landscape Evolution (ELE) and the Genome Engineering and Measurement Lab (GEML) at ETH Zurich are seeking a laboratory technician to join an innovative project focused on developing rapid CRISPR-based environmental DNA (eDNA) detection technologies. Our laboratory studies the intricate mechanisms that shape biodiversity patterns across various spatial and temporal scales, as well as their responses to global changes. GEML serves as a knowledge and technology hub that synchronizes the scientific community with rapidly evolving genome engineering methods and techniques.

This position is situated within a collaborative and interdisciplinary framework, combining expertise in biodiversity research, molecular biology, and engineering. We emphasize translating scientific innovation into pragmatic environmental solutions.

Project Overview

The systematic monitoring of living organisms—from pathogens and pests to agricultural species and overall biodiversity—is becoming imperative to ensure long-term societal well-being. A significant challenge in this domain is the early, reliable, and efficient detection of disruptive species (such as pests or pathogens), which enables timely interventions and informed management decisions. In this venture, we are creating a programmable rapid eDNA detection platform based on CRISPR-Cas reactions for swift and cost-effective organism detection across diverse environmental contexts.

We are laying the groundwork for a new venture and seek a motivated individual to join the project during this formative stage. The role is designed for someone enthusiastic about contributing to the development of a potential spin-off, contingent on the project demonstrating traction and alignment with our goals.

Key Responsibilities

• Collection and processing of eDNA samples from various environments.
• Development, testing, and optimization of molecular reactions and detection methods under both laboratory and field conditions.
• Execution and refinement of molecular biology workflows, including independent troubleshooting and improving robustness and reproducibility.
• Support the generation of high-quality, reproducible data suitable for intellectual property (IP) development and regulatory pathways.
• Work closely with the project lead to shape technical direction, set priorities, and iteratively refine the detection platform.
• Collaborate with external partners and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders as the project evolves.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or related fields.
• Hands-on experience with standard molecular laboratory techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, qPCR).
• Experience in method development and testing protocols under laboratory conditions.
• Strong ability to work independently, plan experiments, document findings, and execute protocols efficiently.
• Interest in translating scientific findings into applications, including IP and commercialization.
• Willingness to engage in broader venture-building activities.
• Industrial or product design experience is advantageous.
• Experience with CRISPR-Cas protocols and environmental DNA samples is a plus.
• Ability to integrate concepts from various disciplines and adapt to evolving project needs.
• Excellent communication and writing skills (English plus one official Swiss language).
