Join the ETH Library as a Senior Data Scientist
The ETH Library plays a vital role in promoting knowledge, supporting research and teaching, and making the past, present, and future more comprehensible. Our Research Analytics Service group, part of the Research Support Services and Acquisitions section, is seeking a talented Senior Data Scientist to join our team, starting on June 1, 2026.
Your Responsibilities
- Conduct and provide scientometric analyses and consulting for researchers, departments, and the executive board of ETH Zurich, presenting findings in a clear and decision-relevant manner.
- Proactively clarify requirements, take ownership of projects from planning through to delivery, including documentation and handover.
- Collaborate closely with various units within ETH Zurich to enhance services by designing, improving, and maintaining reproducible workflows.
- Contribute to the continuous development of innovative, data-driven approaches and projects focused on open data and scientometrics, with a service-oriented and improvement-driven mindset.
Background and Qualifications
- Master’s degree in information science, library science, data science, computer science, or a related field; a PhD is advantageous.
- Possess information science or library science competencies, with research experience or in-depth knowledge of science communication considered a plus.
Technical & Analytical Skills
- Strong programming skills (preferably in Python) and a commitment to producing clear, reproducible, and well-structured code.
- Working knowledge of SQL and/or NoSQL databases, and a willingness to deepen your expertise.
- Strong analytical thinking with a structured, quality-focused approach to data and methods.
- Experience in one or more areas: data engineering, developing data-driven applications, computational linguistics, machine learning/AI, dashboarding, dataset maintenance, contributing to open-source software, digital humanities, or data management systems.
Scientometrics & Research Evaluation Interests
- Experience with scientometric or bibliometric analyses, or a strong motivation to grow in research assessment methods.
- Interest in scholarly communication, open science/open data, and the Swiss research landscape.
Project Delivery & Service Mindset
- Demonstrated ability to drive projects proactively, clarifying needs with stakeholders, structuring work, managing priorities, and delivering results.
- Strong service orientation, with a passion for enabling others and translating questions into actionable analyses.
- Effective communicator, capable of explaining methods, limitations, and insights to diverse audiences in both writing and discussions.
Languages
- Fluency in English and German (both written and spoken).
