Postdoctoral Position in Science, Technology and Society (STS)

The Ethics, Technology and Society research group within the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (D-GESS), led by Prof. Dr. Margarita Boenig-Liptsin, is inviting applications for a Post-doctoral researcher in Science, Technology and Society (STS).

This two-year position is full-time and offers a salary in accordance with the fixed rates of ETH Zurich. We are seeking researchers who will complete their PhD by January 2026 or have completed their PhD within the last two years.

Research within the Ethics, Technology and Society group focuses on the intricate interplay between science, technology, and society, utilizing frameworks from Science, Technology & Society (STS), history, philosophy, anthropology, critical theory, and the arts. We prioritize qualitative methods that combine detailed ethnographic insights with a profound understanding of cultural and political contexts, ideally from a cross-national comparative perspective. Project Background

The candidate for the Post-doctoral researcher position is expected to develop an original research project centered on digital technologies (including computing, data, algorithms, AI) within society. We are specifically looking for candidates who have an interest and experience in STS and humanities pedagogy within the technical university context, and who are skilled at developing research and teaching partnerships with computer science faculty and researchers. Additionally, we seek candidates who are committed to engaging publicly on the ethical, social, and political dimensions of AI.

Job Description

• Conduct qualitative social science (STS) research in the specified area.
• Work towards publications in recognized international journals, including co-authored papers with other group members.
• (Co-)Develop and (co-)teach MA and Bachelor level courses in the Science in Perspective Program.
• Contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching initiatives in collaboration with computer science faculty, researchers, and students at ETH Zurich.
• Engage with the ethical, social, and political aspects of digital technologies within the ETH Public Policy School, the university, Zürich civil society, and wider publics.
• Assist in writing grant proposals to secure external funding.
• Regularly participate in events organized by the Ethics, Technology and Society research group and support its initiatives.
• Actively engage with professors, students, and researchers at the D-GESS department, ETH Zurich, and within the global STS community.

Profile

• Completion of a PhD in Science, Technology and Society (STS) or a related field by January 2026, or submission of a dissertation within the last two years. Candidates with a PhD in engineering or science with substantial experience in STS are also encouraged to apply.
• A distinct research profile in STS or related fields demonstrated by publications and/or teaching focused on digital technologies and society.
• Interest and experience in STS and humanities pedagogy, particularly in engineering contexts.
• Ability to collaborate with computer scientists, natural scientists, and engage with diverse audiences on ethical, social, and political implications of digital technologies.
• Extensive knowledge of STS theories and methods.
• Proficiency in English.

• Knowledge of co-productionist and comparative approaches in STS.
• International experience.
• Strong commitment to teamwork.
• Skills in German, French, or Italian are an advantage.
