Postdoc Position in Light Multiplexed, Fiber-Based Artificial Sensorimotor Network

100%, Zurich, Fixed-term

The Robotic Materials group is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for the exciting topic of light multiplexed artificial sensorimotor networks. This position is funded by our ERC Starting Grant.

Project Background

The introduction of fiber optics in the 1970s revolutionized the telecommunications industry by replacing copper wires, playing a crucial role in the Information Age. A single high-bandwidth fiber optic cable can replace thousands of electrical links, transmitting the same amount of information. As a parallel, the fields of soft devices and robots, controlled by electrical signals, are thriving, leading to the emergence of soft optics—a new platform using light modulation in soft matter to encode multifunctionalities within the optical path.

This project aims to enhance both actuation and sensing capacities using light. It will create an artificial sensorimotor network featuring densely distributed actuators and sensors, similar to biological neuromusculature. The first phase will develop a single soft optical fiber embedded with multimodal actuators that also possess self-sensing capabilities. The second phase will explore the grouped behavior of these muscle bundles to facilitate complex, adaptive, and efficient movements.

Job Description

  • Develop self-sensing methods based on existing light actuators in our group, where the transducer serves both actuation and sensing functions, incorporating feedback control with onboard optoelectronics.
  • Design and microfabricate a soft optical fiber housing distributed transducers configured for multiple modalities, enabling individual addressability through light multiplexing, leveraging the group’s expertise.
  • Demonstrate the single artificial neuromuscular fiber for advanced robotic functions that arise from the integration of distributed and multimodal actuators and sensors.
  • Create grouped neuromuscular bundles with exceptionally high functional density, approaching biological orders of magnitude.
  • Investigate emergent coordinated bundle behavior and motion patterns inspired by biologically similar redundancy, collaboratively working on control and learning aspects.
  • Demonstrate advancements for robotic functionalities.
  • Supervise master's and bachelor's students.
  • Act as a teaching assistant for the robotic materials class.

This is a full-time position that begins as soon as possible. Only applications matching the job profile will be considered. Apply online using the form below.
