Postdoc Position in Development of In Vitro Skin Model Including Sensory Perception

100%, Basel, Fixed-term

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Postdoc to join a collaboration project between the Bioengineering Laboratory (Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich in Basel) and Novartis AG, Basel, Switzerland. This position offers a unique opportunity to collaborate across scientific and organizational boundaries, focusing on developing advanced skin models for studying barrier function and itch, with the potential for therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

Project Background

This project aims to leverage cutting-edge advanced cellular models, bioengineering, and microfluidic approaches to develop skin models that include sensory perception for understanding immunological skin diseases and applications in drug discovery. Current ex vivo skin models, while widely used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic research, are limited in assessing itch-inducing and barrier-compromising conditions in real-time. Emerging models, based on primary keratinocytes and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), can better replicate physiological and disease conditions, but require adaptation for pharmaceutical research and target identification.

Job Description

  • Devise an in vitro 3D human skin model to investigate barrier function under homeostatic conditions and in response to inflammatory stimuli.
  • Develop new skin models that incorporate sensory perception by combining state-of-the-art engineering and microfluidic approaches with innovative cellular models.
  • Set up and culture the 3D skin models while optimizing sensor technology (e.g., TEER and TEWL) for robust assessment of skin barrier functionality.
  • Study itch perception through the integration of iPSC-derived sensory neurons.

Profile

  • A strong background in biology and engineering (e.g., bioengineering, biotechnology, or related fields), with solid knowledge of molecular biology and cell culturing, preferably in microphysiological systems.
  • Experience in primary cell culturing, advanced in vitro models, epithelial/endothelial barrier characterization, and iPSC differentiation.
  • Skills in optical microscopy, sensor development and integration, as well as in electrophysiology are a plus.
  • Exemplary academic excellence, professionalism, and a self-driven nature.
  • Strong communication skills, fluency in English, and a proactive mindset are essential for thriving in this collaborative international environment.

The position is fully funded for an initial period of 2 years, with the possibility of extension up to 4 years. The starting date is flexible but must be before June 2026.
