Postdoctoral Researcher in Synthetic Chemistry for Redox Flow Batteries

Location: 100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Bezdek Research Group in the Department of Chemistry at ETH Zürich is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher in Synthetic Chemistry. The successful candidate will contribute to an industry-supported project focused on the development of organic electron storage molecules (electrolytes) for redox flow battery technologies. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in high-level academic research while collaborating with a dynamic US-based startup, Quino Energy, gaining insight into how fundamental chemistry translates into real-world energy solutions.

Project Background

Organic redox flow batteries represent a promising next-generation technology for large-scale, safe, and sustainable energy storage. Their performance relies critically on the ability to store electrons in robust, cost-effective, and highly soluble redox-active organic electrolyte molecules.

Our project aims to advance this field by developing new synthetic approaches to functional organic compounds suitable for use as electrolytes in flow battery systems. The overarching goal is to expand the accessible chemical space and identify structures with enhanced stability, performance, and scalability.

This work is embedded in an interdisciplinary research environment at ETH Zurich, spanning organic and inorganic synthesis, electrochemistry, and materials science, with the added dimension of collaboration with an industrial partner who will evaluate materials under device-relevant conditions.

Job Description

  • Design, develop, and optimize efficient synthetic routes to organic molecules relevant to flow battery electrolytes.
  • Conduct multistep organic synthesis, purification, and complete molecular characterization (NMR, MS, elemental analysis, etc.).
  • Explore methodological innovations, including catalytic transformations, reductive/oxidative steps, and strategies to enhance scalability and reduce synthetic costs.
  • Interface with project collaborators by delivering well-characterized compounds for electrochemical and performance testing.
  • Present results at internal project meetings and actively engage in scientific discussions guiding the project's direction.
  • Perform or support basic electrochemical measurements to correlate structure and function.

Profile

  • PhD in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong experience in synthetic chemistry, including route scouting, multistep synthesis, and rigorous analytical characterization.
  • Proven ability to work independently, troubleshoot reactions, and advance project goals.
  • Interest in energy storage, redox chemistry, or electrochemical applications (prior experience is welcome but not required).
  • Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for contributing to high-impact research.
  • Collaborative mindset and motivation to work in a dynamic team involving academic and industrial partners.

Workplace

ETH Zurich offers an excellent research environment with access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.
