Postdoc in Direct Ink Writing of Thermo-Electric Materials

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Advanced Manufacturing Lab (am|z) at the Department of Mechanical & Process Engineering (D-MAVT) at ETH Zurich is at the forefront of developing advanced manufacturing methods and systems aimed at overcoming the limitations of contemporary materials processing technologies. We are focused on designing and fabricating active structures through innovative hybrid production methods. We are currently seeking a highly motivated Postdoc to advance the development of direct ink writing techniques for thermo-electric materials, specifically targeting non-planar metallic substrates.

Project Background

This position is part of the recently awarded Meta.Morphos project, funded by the ESA ESDI Phi-Lab Switzerland. The project's overarching goal is to forge new methods for designing and producing thermally actuated structures and mechanisms incorporating thermo-electric materials, which are particularly significant in space applications where weight, volume, power, and resource constraints are critical.

The project consortium includes multiple labs at ETH Zurich and research partners from Inspire AG, alongside industrialization partners. The primary focus of this position will be the development of materials and methods for the direct deposition and fabrication of thermo-electric devices onto non-planar metallic substrates. Additionally, the team will create techniques for designing and manufacturing structural components with predictable material properties. Ultimately, these two technologies will be integrated to craft cohesive, functional devices, guided by application-specific use cases provided by industrial partners.

Job Description

  • Characterization of powdered materials for ink formulation
  • Development of the DIW process for ceramic and thermoelectric materials, including optimization of parameters and evaluation of resolution
  • Setup, programming, and operation of DIW equipment
  • Determination of optimal debinding and sintering steps
  • Characterization of sintered materials: density, microstructure, defects, shrinkage, potential distortions, and preliminary thermoelectrical properties
  • Conducting validation studies under simulated environmental conditions
  • Assisting with the industrial transfer of developed technologies
  • Publishing research findings in leading international journals and presenting at conferences
  • Engagement in teaching and lab responsibilities outside of the project (approximately 15-20% of working time)

Profile

  • PhD in Material Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry
  • Knowledge and practical experience in direct ink writing technology, thermoelectric and ceramic materials, powder technologies, and material characterization with a strong publication record
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English; German language skills are advantageous

Workplace

The Advanced Manufacturing Lab (am|z), founded in 2020 and led by Prof. Bambach, currently employs approximately 50 individuals who are engaged in cutting-edge research in additive and hybrid manufacturing processes as well as advanced process control.
