Postdoctoral Researcher in Development of a Microfluidic Platform for Diagnosis of Sepsis / Postdoctoral Researcheress in Development of a Microfluidic Platform for Diagnosis of Sepsis

ETH Zurich Zürich December 15, 2025

Postdoc Position in Development of a Microfluidic Platform for Diagnosis of Sepsis

100%, Basel, fixed-term

We are pioneering lab-on-chip technology (or microfluidic technology) for innovative applications across the life sciences and biomedicine. Our interdisciplinary approach involves the design and manufacturing of miniaturized platforms, optimized for biochemical assays and analytical procedures.

For a third-party funded project running for four years, we are offering a postdoctoral fellow position.

Project Background

The project RadiantDx is a multidisciplinary initiative focused on sepsis diagnosis. Sepsis is a critical health condition characterized by nonspecific symptoms such as high fever. To assist medical professionals in treatment decisions, we are developing a miniaturized system for the rapid diagnosis of sepsis, which aims to reduce unnecessary antibiotic administration and enhance patient survival and recovery. Collaborating with researchers from the Institute of Medical Microbiology at the University of Zurich, the Department of Informatics at ETH Zurich, and several other partners, we are addressing this challenge by integrating microfluidic technology, sequencing, and swift data analysis.

Within the Bioanalytics Group, the postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with a PhD student on various aspects of the microfluidic platform and sample preparation.

Job Description

The postdoctoral fellow will undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Design and manufacture a microfluidic platform
  • Develop, optimize, and test biological assays
  • Perform imaging, data analysis, and interpretation
  • Prepare the platform for use in a clinical setting
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals
  • Actively participate in group meetings
  • Write reports and present results during research consortium meetings
  • Coordinate work with research consortium partners

Profile

  • A PhD degree in fields related to microfluidics, microsystems engineering, biomedical engineering, or interdisciplinary study programs.
  • Candidates with backgrounds in biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, or microbiology with experience in method and technology development are encouraged to apply.
  • The ability to integrate biological and technological aspects is central to our group and this project. Ideal candidates should have a strong willingness to learn and enhance innovative methods, be open to diverse research disciplines, and possess excellent communication skills across disciplines.
  • Strong communication (in English) and teamwork skills are essential.

We Offer

We provide the successful candidate with:

  • An intellectually stimulating position within a dynamic interdisciplinary team
  • Engaging, applied work alongside computer scientists, clinicians, and microbiologists
  • Opportunities to develop technology and methods closest to patient needs
  • Development of personal skills, including writing, presentation, and project management
  • Possibility to work with and supervise students
  • Participation in international conferences
