Job opportunity
The Nuclear Safety and Multiphase Flows Laboratory (NS-ECMFL) is a research group within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich, led by Prof. Dr. Annalisa Manera.
Our lab specializes in experimental and computational studies of multiphase flows and thermal-hydraulic phenomena in nuclear systems. We develop advanced measurement techniques, perform high-resolution experiments, and conduct multi-scale, multi-physics simulations. Our objective is to enhance nuclear reactor safety and efficiency through innovative passive safety systems and detailed analyses of complex fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes.
This project, in which ETH Zurich plays a pivotal role, significantly contributes to various research and development aspects of nuclear safety. The focus is on gathering critical data on liquid source terms, enhancing our understanding of associated phenomena, and developing tools to simulate relevant processes. In collaboration with PSI, ETH reviews data from previous projects, including leaching tests of Chornobyl's lava in various liquids, and also assesses data from Fukushima-related research projects, particularly concerning thermodynamic data for caesium and strontium compounds.
ETH is actively engaged in developing and validating new simulation models. This entails reviewing simulation tools and databases, such as thermodynamic solvers, to improve our understanding of liquid speciation and dissolution processes. Our efforts include summarizing knowledge on the use of the GEMS thermochemical solver and HERACLES thermodynamic database, which are specifically aimed at nuclear applications. These initiatives are essential for the development and integration of new models into severe accident (SA) codes, including validating thermodynamic data to predict the behavior of fission products like caesium and strontium in liquid phases during accidents.
In the context of the project, your duties will involve the following tasks:
At ETH Zurich, we value social and leadership competencies, fostering a collaborative work culture.
