ETH Zurich - January 14, 2026

Laboratory Technician for the Analysis of Environmental DNA

60%-80%, Zurich, Fixed-Term

The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution at ETH Zurich is seeking a motivated candidate to fill a technician position focused on the analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) samples. Our international research team, composed of diverse scientific expertise and backgrounds, is united by the common goal of enhancing our understanding of biodiversity. We investigate the mechanisms that shape biodiversity patterns across various spatial and temporal scales—in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems—while examining their responses to global changes. Through biological monitoring, eDNA methods, remote sensing, and field sampling, we utilize these data to address questions using statistical and process-based models of biological diversity. We are also committed to translating our scientific findings into practical environmental applications, striving to propose solutions for critical environmental challenges.

Project Background

Human activities disrupt natural ecosystems, ultimately affecting the functioning of human societies. To ensure long-term societal well-being, monitoring living organisms is becoming increasingly crucial across various domains. Utilizing eDNA enables efficient and cost-effective tracking of multiple species occupancy at diverse locations. In our laboratory, we study both natural and anthropogenic drivers of biodiversity, monitoring them through environmental DNA (eDNA) and sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA). Our primary objective is to deepen our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and landscape evolution, as well as to devise strategies to combat biodiversity erosion.

Job Description

As a Laboratory Technician, you will primarily focus on the extraction of DNA from environmental samples, specifically water and sediment, collected in collaboration with various international partners. Working independently in a clean laboratory environment, you will manage the entire workflow—from equipment preparation prior to sampling to sample reception, library preparation, and sequencing organization. Additionally, you will oversee laboratory supplies, maintain the cleanliness of the workspace, and contribute to the development and standardization of protocols.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing established molecular biology procedures, including eDNA and sedaDNA extraction, PCR, and library preparation
  • Managing the workflow of environmental samples from reception to sequencing
  • Maintaining and organizing both the clean laboratory and general laboratory spaces
  • Handling laboratory logistics, including inventory, consumables ordering, and equipment upkeep
  • Ensuring high standards of cleanliness and contamination control in the clean lab
  • Supporting the maintenance and organization of the eDNA biobank
  • Preparing and assembling sampling kits for field campaigns
  • Training colleagues in eDNA extraction and library preparation protocols
  • Working independently while adhering to established procedures and safety guidelines

This fixed-term position is associated with a project lasting four years.

Profile

We seek a well-organized, precise, and motivated technician with proven experience in molecular biology. You should be able to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment, demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility in your laboratory tasks.

Essential qualifications and attributes:

  • Completed training as a laboratory technician or equivalent education in molecular biology or a related field
  • Hands-on experience with molecular techniques, including DNA extraction (preferably from environmental samples), PCR, and library preparation
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow established protocols with precision and consistency
  • Capacity for independent problem-solving and task management
  • Team-oriented mindset with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic research environment
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)
  • Willingness to travel for DNA extractions in other laboratories and train collaborators

Additional assets:

  • Good laboratory practice
  • Experience in ecological or environmental applications of molecular biology
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics or a willingness to develop such skills
