Laboratory Technician / Laboratory Technicianess

ETH Zurich Zürich December 15, 2025

Laboratory Technician for the Analysis of Environmental DNA

60%-80%, Zurich, Fixed-term

The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution at ETH Zurich is seeking motivated candidates for a technician position focused on the analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) samples. Our international research team, rich in diverse scientific expertise and backgrounds, is united by the goal of understanding biodiversity. We study the mechanisms that shape biodiversity patterns across both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems while addressing their responses to global changes. Through biological monitoring, eDNA methods, remote sensing, and field sampling, we gather data to tackle questions related to biological diversity using statistical and process-based models. Our commitment extends to translating scientific findings and innovations into practical environmental applications, driving solutions to major ecological challenges.

Project Background

Human activities disrupt natural ecosystems, impacting the functionality of human societies. To ensure long-term societal well-being, monitoring living organisms has become increasingly essential across various domains. eDNA techniques enable fast and cost-effective tracking of multiple species across various sites. In our laboratory, we explore natural and anthropogenic drivers of biodiversity, utilizing environmental DNA (eDNA) and sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA) to monitor ecosystem dynamics and landscape evolution. Our primary goal is to deepen our understanding of these dynamics and devise strategies to halt biodiversity erosion.

Job Description

As a Laboratory Technician, your chief responsibility will be the extraction of DNA from environmental samples, particularly water and sediment, in an independent capacity within a clean laboratory environment. You will oversee the workflow from equipment preparation for sampling through to library preparation and sequencing organization. Additional responsibilities include managing laboratory consumables, maintaining cleanliness, and contributing to the development and standardization of protocols.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing established molecular biology procedures, including eDNA and sedaDNA extraction, PCR, and library preparation.
  • Managing the workflow of environmental samples from reception to sequencing.
  • Assisting in maintaining and organizing laboratory spaces.
  • Overseeing laboratory logistics, including inventory, consumable orders, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ensuring high standards of cleanliness and contamination control in the lab.
  • Supporting the maintenance and organization of the eDNA biobank.
  • Preparing and assembling sampling kits for field campaigns.
  • Training others in the protocols for eDNA extraction and library preparation.
  • Working independently while adhering to established procedures and safety guidelines.

This fixed-term position is associated with a four-year project.
