Laboratory Technician / Laboratory Technicianess

ETH Zurich Zürich December 5, 2025

Laboratory Technician for the Analysis of Environmental DNA

60%-80%, Zurich, Fixed-Term

The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution at ETH Zurich is seeking candidates for a technician position focused on the analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) samples. Our internationally diverse research team is dedicated to understanding biodiversity and studying the mechanisms that shape biodiversity patterns across both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in response to global changes. We collect data through biological monitoring, eDNA methods, remote sensing, and field sampling, employing these findings to address questions with statistical and process-based models. We pride ourselves on translating basic scientific discoveries and innovative technologies into practical environmental applications, actively seeking solutions to major environmental challenges.

Project Background

Human activities are disrupting natural ecosystems, which consequently threatens the functioning of human societies. To ensure long-term societal well-being, monitoring living organisms has become crucial across various domains. Environmental DNA (eDNA) enables rapid and cost-effective tracking of multiple species across different sites. In our laboratory, we explore the natural and anthropogenic drivers of biodiversity through eDNA and sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA). Our overarching goal is to enhance our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and landscape evolution, ultimately finding ways to halt biodiversity erosion.

We are looking for a motivated and skilled laboratory technician to support a wide range of molecular laboratory tasks, primarily focusing on the processing of eDNA samples. Responsibilities include DNA extraction in a clean laboratory setting, PCR, and library preparation for high-throughput sequencing. This role also involves maintaining and organizing the eDNA biobank, preparing sampling kits for field campaigns, and assisting others in eDNA extractions and library preparations. You will contribute significantly to impactful ecological research aimed at halting biodiversity loss and measuring favorable actions for nature.

Job Description

In this position, you will primarily be responsible for extracting DNA from environmental samples, particularly water and sediment, collected through various international collaborations, working independently in a clean laboratory environment. You will manage the entire workflow, from equipment preparation and sample reception to library preparation and sequencing organization. Furthermore, you will oversee laboratory consumables, maintain cleanliness and organization in the lab, and contribute to the development and standardization of protocols.

As a Laboratory Technician, your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing established molecular biology procedures, including eDNA or sedaDNA extraction, PCR, and library preparation
  • Managing the workflow of environmental samples from reception to sequencing
  • Maintaining and organizing both the clean laboratory and general laboratory spaces
  • Overseeing laboratory logistics, including inventory, consumable orders, and equipment upkeep
  • Ensuring high standards of cleanliness and contamination control in the clean lab
  • Supporting the maintenance and organization of the eDNA biobank
  • Preparing and assembling sampling kits for field campaigns
  • Training others in eDNA extraction and library preparation protocols
  • Working independently while adhering to established procedures and safety guidelines

This position is a fixed-term appointment associated with a project that lasts four years.

Profile

We are searching for a well-organized, precise, and motivated technician with a proven background in molecular biology. You should be able to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment, bringing a strong sense of responsibility to laboratory tasks.

Essential qualifications and attributes:

  • Completed training as a laboratory technician or equivalent education in molecular biology or a related field
  • Hands-on experience with molecular techniques, including DNA extraction (preferably from environmental samples), PCR, and library preparation
  • Good laboratory practice
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow established protocols with precision and consistency
  • Independent problem-solving and task management skills
  • Team-oriented mindset with excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic research environment
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)
  • Willingness to travel for DNA extractions and training in other laboratories and institutions

Additional assets:

  • Experience in ecological or environmental applications of molecular biology
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics or interest in developing such skills
