Job Opportunity: Senior Software Engineer (C++/Python) – Computational Life and Health Sciences

The Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Society (IT’IS) is an independent, nonprofit research organization closely associated with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. We are currently seeking a talented individual for the position of Senior Software Engineer (C++/Python) within our collaborative network, Zurich43.

Zurich43 unites IT’IS with our partner organizations Schmid & Partner Engineering AG (SPEAG), ZMT Zurich MedTech AG (ZMT), and TI Solutions AG (TI Solutions) to advance research and technology in three pivotal areas:

  • Characterization, optimization, and application of the electromagnetic (EM) near-field
  • Predictive modeling of interactions between physical agents and physiology in complex anatomies
  • Medical applications that bridge fundamental research with real-world impact

At the heart of this mission lies Sim4Life, the world’s leading simulation platform that integrates physics, biology, and engineering in a unified framework. Researchers utilize Sim4Life to model the human body, medical devices, and their interactions, driving impactful scientific advancements.

Your Challenges

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will immerse yourself in our simulation platform, engaging in feature development, infrastructure enhancement, performance optimization, and scientific workflows. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Extending and adapting our extensive C++/Python code base for web-based applications
  • Designing and maintaining scalable, asynchronous services for seamless communication and data exchange within our distributed simulation platform
  • Integrating various third-party libraries and solvers, ensuring the stability and efficiency of our build and continuous integration pipelines
  • Supporting performance improvements, deployment strategies, and container-based architectures

Your Strengths

  • Minimum of three years of robust experience with C++ and Python, with expertise in managing large, long-lived code bases
  • Curiosity, organization, and comfort in navigating different layers of the technology stack, from low-level performance optimization to cloud deployment
  • Hands-on experience with technologies such as boost, pybind, aiohttp/FastAPI, WebSockets, REST, WebRTC, ZeroMQ, make/CMake, Docker-based containerization, or Gitlab CI/CD pipelines is ideal
  • Understanding of modern asynchronous design patterns and an eagerness to tackle complex computational science problems
  • Basic knowledge of the AWS cloud stack is a plus, as our platform is fully hosted on AWS
  • A strong sense of responsibility and commitment to the highest quality standards of work
  • Self-motivation, excellent organizational and communication skills, impeccable attention to detail, a friendly demeanor, and a team-oriented spirit
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while meeting tight deadlines
  • Commitment to effectively address the needs of partners and customers
  • Proficiency in English (both written and spoken); knowledge of German is an advantage
