Position Overview

This position reports to the Research Team Manager - Sensing & Analytics.

Your Role and Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist, you will focus on developing sensing solutions for ABB's next-generation systems and products. We seek a team member with a proven research background and a passion for translating world-class academic research into practical industrial applications. You will collaborate with a dynamic, international team of scientists at ABB Research, in an innovative work environment that offers diverse opportunities for career growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to research projects in sensing and machine perception, addressing the needs of our businesses, including process automation, process industries, port automation, and maritime transport.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to develop novel, high-value sensing products and solutions from concept definition to experimental verification.
  • Evaluate new technologies, conduct technical surveys, generate impactful project proposals, and collaborate with researchers and engineers from other research centers, ABB business units, and universities.
  • Disseminate your findings through scientific publications and internal technical reports, and contribute to generating intellectual property.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field, with a strong background in machine perception and computer vision.
  • Expertise in fields such as machine learning, reinforcement learning, sensor fusion, or digital signal processing is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, C/C++) and familiarity with the Linux ecosystem.
  • Hands-on experience with sensing hardware and software frameworks for cameras, LIDAR, or radar (e.g. OpenCV, ROS2) is a plus.
  • Proven record of publications at top scientific conferences and journals.
  • A team player with a willingness to learn about new industrial applications and work with a variety of technologies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
