Postdoc Position in Development of a Microfluidic Platform for Diagnosis of Sepsis

100%, Basel, Fixed-term

We are developing innovative lab-on-chip technology (microfluidic technology) for applications in life sciences and biomedicine. Our interdisciplinary approach encompasses the design and manufacturing of miniaturized platforms, along with their optimization for biochemical assays and analytical procedures.

For a third-party funded project running over four years, we are offering a PhD position in addition to a postdoctoral fellow position.

Project Background

The RadiantDx project is a multidisciplinary initiative aimed at improving the diagnosis of sepsis. Sepsis is a severe health condition characterized by nonspecific symptoms, such as high fever. To assist doctors in determining the treatment for patients, we aim to develop a miniaturized system for rapid diagnosis of sepsis, thereby preventing unnecessary antibiotic administration and enhancing patient survival and recovery. Collaborating with researchers from the Institute of Medical Microbiology at the University of Zurich, the Department of Informatics at ETH Zurich, and several other partners, we tackle this challenge by integrating microfluidic technology, sequencing, and rapid data analysis.

In the Bioanalytics Group, a PhD student and a postdoctoral fellow will collaborate on various aspects of the microfluidic platform and sample preparation.

Job Description

The postdoctoral fellow will work alongside a PhD student on the following tasks:

  • Design and manufacture a microfluidic platform
  • Develop, optimize, and test biological assays
  • Perform imaging, data analysis, and interpretation
  • Prepare the platform for clinical use
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participate actively in group meetings
  • Write reports and present results in research consortium meetings
  • Coordinate work with partners of the research consortium

Profile

  • PhD degree in fields related to microfluidics, microsystems engineering, biomedical engineering, or interdisciplinary study programs.
  • Candidates with a background in biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, or microbiology, with experience in method and technology development, are encouraged to apply.
  • The combination of biological and technological aspects is central to our group and this project. Candidates should be eager to learn and improve upon novel methods, be open to various research disciplines, and communicate effectively across fields.
  • Good communication skills in English and strong teamwork abilities are essential.

Workplace

Your workplace will be in a stimulating environment that fosters collaboration among diverse professionals.
