Portfolio Analyst Role

The Portfolio Analyst position offers an exciting opportunity to provide fundamental research and quantitative analysis in support of a commodity trading desk specializing in energy commodities. This role seamlessly blends physical market expertise, advanced coding skills, and commercial judgment to guide trading and portfolio decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and forecast US natural gas supply, demand, storage, pipeline flows, and LNG feedgas demand.
  • Examine regional power supply and demand, factoring in electricity load, generation mix, renewable output, plant outages, and transmission constraints.
  • Assess regional gas pricing and basis relationships, power prices, generation economics, and the interactions between gas and power markets.
  • Evaluate the implications of weather, infrastructure developments, regulatory changes, and supply disruptions on market balances and portfolio risks.
  • Develop Python and SQL models to automate analysis, forecasting, and reporting processes.
  • Communicate findings to traders and portfolio managers through reports, dashboards, and discussions.
  • Translate research into actionable market insights and trading recommendations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline; a relevant master’s degree is desirable.
  • CFA qualification or progress toward the charter is advantageous.
  • 5–7 years of relevant experience in physical US natural gas and/or power markets, ideally at a utility, energy producer, power generator, or physical commodity merchant.
  • Strong understanding of US gas infrastructure, regional supply and demand balances, and organized wholesale power markets.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying physical market knowledge to forecasting, commercial analysis, and trading decisions.

Technical Skills

  • Strong Python coding skills, including proficiency in pandas and NumPy for data analysis, modeling, and automation.
  • Proficiency in SQL for extracting, combining, and validating large datasets.
  • Experience in integrating APIs and building reliable data pipelines for market, weather, and operational data.
  • Practical knowledge of statistical modeling, econometrics, time-series forecasting, and scenario analysis.
  • Experience modeling gas balances, weather-sensitive demand, power dispatch, or regional pricing relationships.
  • Ability to validate models and maintain documented, reproducible code using version control.
