Portfolio Analyst — European and Asian Gas Markets
The Portfolio Analyst role provides fundamental research and quantitative analysis to support a commodity trading desk, specializing in energy commodities. This role combines physical market expertise, coding skills, and commercial judgment to inform trading and portfolio decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze and forecast gas supply, demand, storage, and LNG flows.
- Assess LNG cargo economics, infrastructure constraints, and regional pricing relationships.
- Evaluate weather patterns, geopolitical developments, and supply disruptions along with their implications for portfolio risks.
- Develop Python and SQL models to automate analysis, forecasting, and reporting.
- Communicate findings to traders and portfolio managers through reports, dashboards, and discussions.
- Translate research into actionable market views and trading recommendations.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline; a relevant master’s degree is desirable.
- CFA qualification, or progress towards the charter, is advantageous.
- 5–7 years of relevant experience in the physical side of gas and LNG markets, ideally at a utility, energy producer, or physical commodity merchant.
- Demonstrated experience in applying physical market knowledge to forecasting, commercial analysis, and trading decisions.
Technical Skills
- Strong Python coding skills, including pandas and NumPy, for data analysis, modeling, and automation.
- Proficiency in SQL for extracting, combining, and validating large datasets.
- Experience in integrating APIs and building reliable data pipelines.
- Practical knowledge of statistical modeling, econometrics, time-series forecasting, and scenario analysis.
- Ability to validate models and maintain documented, reproducible code using version control.
