Join Our Team as a Photonics Lab and Cleanroom Manager
Are you a scientist or R&D engineer with hands-on experience in lasers and semiconductor or MEMS cleanrooms, poised to take the next exciting step in your career? At Lightium, we are at the forefront of developing next-generation photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN). We are seeking a dedicated Photonics Lab and Cleanroom Manager to serve as the technical beacon of our cleanroom and optical laboratories.
Position Summary
We are looking for a practical Photonics Lab and Cleanroom Manager to oversee the technical operations of our cleanroom and optical laboratories, which facilitate both R&D activities and production processes supported by dedicated operators. In this role, you will establish cleanroom discipline, coordinate tool maintenance with tool owners, assist in planning cleanroom expansion, and fulfill the responsibilities of Laser Safety Officer for our Class 3B laser setups, ensuring the lab remains organized and efficient for both exploratory work and stable production flow.
Key Responsibilities
- Cleanroom Operations & Discipline: Manage the daily technical operations of our cleanroom, including BEOL metrology, characterization, and processing of TFLN PICs for R&D and production. Implement Kaizen and 5S practices, organize cable and fiber management, and create trusted chemical handling and waste management procedures.
- Cleanroom Expansion & Lab Setup: Lead the technical planning for cleanroom expansion, covering layout, airflow, gowning, and process area definition. Work with suppliers and contractors to specify wet benches, process gas lines, ventilation, and chemical distribution, and assist in designing optical setups for consistency, ergonomics, and safety.
- Equipment & Tool Maintenance: Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance for cleanroom tools, collaborating with the metrology, characterization, and process teams. Maintain organized records of maintenance, spare parts, and service contracts, while monitoring stock of consumables and PPE.
- Laser & EHS Safety: Assume the role of Laser Safety Officer (LSO), managing our Class 3B laser environments. Ensure that laser interlocks, signage, PPE, and training records are maintained alongside broader EHS and quality policy initiatives.
- Procedures, Training & Continuous Improvement: Develop and sustain cleanroom and optical lab procedures as living documents. Run onboarding and refresher training programs, and continuously enhance workflows in collaboration with R&D and production teams.
What You’ll Bring
- Educational Background: PhD or MSc in physics, photonics, electrical engineering, materials science, microtechnology, or a related field, complemented by 5+ years of hands-on R&D experience in a semiconductor, MEMS, photonics, or comparable high-tech cleanroom.
- Technical Expertise: Extensive experience with optical setups and lasers; possessing a laser safety certificate and a willingness to serve as our LSO is a significant advantage. Familiarity with cleanroom protocols, wafer handling, chemical safety, and process tool environments is essential, with experience in ISO 14644, ISO 9001, IEC 60825, and SEMI standards considered a plus.
- Mindset: Exposure to or genuine interest in Kaizen, 5S, or lean methodologies applied within a scientific context. A strong motivation to transition from pure research into a role that affects the evolution of scientific practices. Scientifically credible and respected among peers; pragmatic and adaptable in a fast-paced startup environment.
- Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in German or Swiss German is a considerable asset when engaging with local suppliers, subcontractors, and authorities.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation and benefits package, including an employee stock option plan (ESOP), fully-covered Pillar Two, and generous vacation.
- A unique opportunity to spearhead a cutting-edge manufacturing initiative in the rapidly growing field of photonics.
- A collaborative and innovative work environment where your contributions will help shape the future of telecommunications, datacom, and beyond.
- Become an integral part of an early-phase startup alongside a young, motivated, and energetic team, with opportunities to rapidly develop your professional skills.
