Laboratory Technician / Laboratory Technicianess

ETH Zurich Zürich December 18, 2025

Laboratory Technician for the Analysis of Environmental DNA

60%-80%, Zurich, Fixed-Term

The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution at ETH Zurich is seeking candidates for a technician position focused on the analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) samples. Our international research team brings together diverse scientific expertise, driven by the mission to understand biodiversity. We investigate the mechanisms that shape biodiversity across various scales, both terrestrial and aquatic, and assess their responses to global changes. Through biological monitoring, environmental DNA methods, remote sensing, and field sampling, we collect data to address important questions regarding biological diversity using statistical and process-based models. We are committed to translating our scientific findings and cutting-edge technologies into environmental applications, addressing significant challenges in our ecosystems.

Project Background

Human activities disrupt natural ecosystems, impacting the functioning of societies. Monitoring living organisms is becoming increasingly vital across various domains, and eDNA techniques offer fast and cost-effective solutions for tracking multiple species across diverse locations. In our laboratory, we explore natural and anthropogenic factors influencing biodiversity, utilizing eDNA and sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA) as key tools. Our overarching goal is to deepen our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and landscape evolution while devising strategies to mitigate biodiversity loss.

We are looking for a motivated and skilled laboratory technician to support a wide range of molecular laboratory tasks, with a primary focus on processing eDNA samples. Responsibilities will include DNA extraction in a clean laboratory environment, PCR, and library preparation for high-throughput sequencing. The role also encompasses maintaining and organizing the eDNA biobank, preparing sampling kits for field campaigns, and assisting colleagues in conducting eDNA extractions and library preparations. You will contribute to impactful ecological research aimed at halting biodiversity loss and promoting conservation initiatives.

Job Description

In this role, you will be primarily responsible for extracting DNA from environmental samples, particularly water and sediment, collected through various international collaborations, while working independently in a clean laboratory setting. Your responsibilities include managing the entire workflow, from equipment preparation before sampling, receiving samples, to library preparation and organizing sequencing activities. Additionally, you'll handle laboratory consumables, maintain cleanliness and organization, and contribute to the development and standardization of protocols.

As a Laboratory Technician, your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing established molecular biology procedures, including environmental DNA (eDNA) or sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA) extraction, PCR, and library preparation.
  • Managing the workflow of environmental samples from reception to sequencing.
  • Helping to maintain and organize the clean laboratory and general laboratory spaces.
  • Managing laboratory logistics, including inventory, consumable orders, and equipment upkeep.
  • Ensuring high standards of cleanliness and contamination control in the clean lab.
  • Supporting the maintenance and organization of the eDNA biobank.
  • Ordering, organizing, preparing, and assembling sampling kits for field campaigns.
  • Training others in the application of eDNA extraction and library preparation protocols.
  • Working independently while adhering to established protocols and safety guidelines.

This is a fixed-term position associated with a project lasting four years.

Profile

We are looking for a well-organized, precise, and motivated technician with proven experience in molecular biology. You should be capable of working independently while thriving in a collaborative team environment and possess a strong sense of responsibility in conducting laboratory tasks.

Essential qualifications and attributes:

  • Completed training as a laboratory technician or equivalent education in molecular biology or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with molecular techniques, including DNA extraction (preferably from environmental samples), PCR, and library preparation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow established protocols with precision and consistency.
  • Capacity for independent problem-solving and task management.
  • Team-oriented mindset with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic research environment.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written).
  • Willingness to travel to conduct DNA extractions at other laboratories and institutions and train collaborators.

Additional assets:

  • Familiarity with good laboratory practices.
  • Experience in ecological or environmental applications of molecular biology.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics or a keen interest in developing such skills.

Workplace

Join us in a stimulating academic environment at one of the world's leading technical universities. You will have the opportunity to contribute to impactful projects aimed at promoting biodiversity, working alongside an international and vibrant team dedicated to refining and expanding both interpersonal and methodological skills.
