We are renowned for our exceptional optics stack and have developed ultra-lightweight waveguides and display systems that push the boundaries of AR technology. With over a decade of experience in AR innovation, we have achieved significant advancements in text legibility, color fidelity, and rich digital content visuals while continuously expanding the field of view to deliver engaging, immersive AR experiences.

If you're looking to be part of a cohesive team where everyone is empowered and entrusted to make a meaningful impact, Magic Leap is the place for you. Here, you can explore innovative solutions and leverage your talents to tackle real-world challenges. Working alongside industry experts, you will enhance your skills while helping to make our technology accessible to millions as a partner in the mixed reality (XR) ecosystem. We believe that successful change and progress thrive on diverse perspectives, and as we shape our future, every voice matters. Together, we can redefine the world of work and, through our bold partners, turn the impossible into reality.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of four within the Perception group. The manager will oversee systems that collect essential real-world sensor data, including ground truth, from our XR devices. This data is crucial for the development and validation of a range of perception features such as head tracking, eye tracking, depth estimation, and object tracking. In this role, you'll bridge leadership and hands-on technical contribution—defining technical strategies, setting roadmaps with internal stakeholders, architecting data collection tools, and writing production code, all while building and mentoring a cross-disciplinary engineering team. You will oversee two data collection labs equipped with tools such as OptiTrack, LiDARs, and robotic arms located in different geographic regions.

This position requires a seasoned, versatile engineer who can operate autonomously, identify opportunities, balance strategic planning with tactical execution, and foster talent while driving technical excellence. Please note that this role entails leading a distributed team across Europe and the US, so flexibility in working across multiple time zones is essential. It is a hybrid role, but proximity to our Zurich office is required, along with occasional travel.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for internal clients, proactively aligning data delivery roadmaps with business needs.
  • Design, develop, and maintain hardware and software solutions for ground truth data collection in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Lead the individual development and maintenance of production software in Python and C++.
  • Maintain strategic oversight of vendor relationships for hardware and software tools, evaluating and selecting optimal solutions.
  • Orchestrate data collection operations with internal teams and external data collectors.
  • Set technical direction and priorities for a cross-disciplinary computer vision team.
  • Mentor and coach team members with technical expertise and empathy, supporting their professional growth and career development.

The Experience You Bring

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience in Python and C++.
  • 3+ years of experience in geometric computer vision.
  • 3+ years of technical leadership experience managing and mentoring engineering teams.
  • Proven track record in system architecture involving both hardware and software.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate with a high level of autonomy in ambiguous environments.

It’s Exciting If You Also Have

  • Experience with camera calibration, bundle adjustment, and hand-eye calibration techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with OptiTrack or similar motion capture systems.
  • Background in XR/AR/VR development.
  • Experience integrating and calibrating LiDAR sensors.
  • Strong rapid prototyping skills for hardware and software systems.
