Sensor Development Engineer (m/f/d)

Join our team at Roche Diagnostics International AG in Rotkreuz as a Sensor Development Engineer (m/f/d), where you will play a vital role in the development and optimization of electrochemical sensors for medical devices in the IVD diagnostics area.

Project Background

As part of the Technical Project Support Team, situated within the Blood Gas Electrolytes (BGE) Sensor Development SubChapter, you will contribute to the crafting of innovative instruments vital for hospitals and testing laboratories. We are seeking a team-oriented, inquisitive, and self-reliant individual to enhance our technological advancements.

The focus of our team includes measuring various parameters of gases (O2 & CO2), electrolytes (pH, Na+, K+, Ca2+, & Cl-), and metabolites (Glucose & Lactate) in whole blood. Utilizing electrochemical, optical, and enzymatic measuring principles, you will be instrumental in developing new methods based on theoretical foundations, while also providing technical expertise to support both series production and existing market products.

The Perfect Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A higher technical education (Master's from a University, ETH, or FH) or a Bachelor's degree with over three years of industry experience.
  • A robust understanding of materials including glasses, metals, polymers, and their interactions with sensors and biological samples.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing new characterization methods within a regulated environment.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Address product care topics within our in-house Sensor Production, managing production issues and customer complaint investigations.
  • Implement changes based on fundamental principles, experimental data, and simulation models, integrating them into both new and existing products.
  • Independently plan, execute, evaluate results, and document your work across development, product care, and operational support.
  • Conduct tests and analyze sensor designs using various characterization methods (e.g., electrochemical analysis, IR, SEM, Rheometer).
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to plan projects, conduct investigations, and generate required data and documentation.
  • Take ownership of equipment, developing new tools, methods, and processes for sensor evaluation.
  • Provide scientific expertise and practical knowledge to resolve technical questions in the development and production of complex electrochemical sensors and electrodes.
  • Coordinate design and material changes across the business with quality, operation, V&V, and other departments.
  • Support sensor development activities in new projects as needed based on product care situations.

Must Haves

  • A higher technical education (Master's from FH/University/ETH) in chemistry, physics, material science, or (electrical) engineering, or a Bachelor's degree complemented by more than three years of industry experience.
  • A solid grasp of materials and their interactions with sensors and biological samples.
  • A keen interest and dedication to studying, testing, and improving electrochemical/optical (bio)sensors.
  • Experience in a highly regulated environment.
  • Proficiency in acquiring, processing, and analyzing data using tools such as Matlab, Excel, MiniTab, R, or Python.
  • Ability to document results comprehensively and communicate technical information effectively.
  • Fluent communication skills in English; German skills are an advantage.
  • A proactive, flexible, and team-oriented mindset.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with different electrochemical methods (potentiometry, impedance spectroscopy, etc.) and a broader understanding of physical and chemical analysis.
  • Initial working experience in a production industry.
