Summary
We are seeking a dedicated professional for the timely and independent management of complex intellectual property (IP) administrative, filing, and legal support tasks. This role requires proactive involvement in a high-performing team that provides diverse and complex IP administrative support for our group of patent practitioners, both regionally and internationally.
- Maintain and manage a complex and accurate docket using a patent docketing system.
- Demonstrate expert knowledge and understanding of IP law and practice issues.
- Undertake operational and strategic responsibilities to maximize the effectiveness of paralegal support at both local and global levels.
- Contribute to the improvement of departmental best practices and provide training in European Patents (EP) and foreign patent matters.
- Lead teams within the Patent Support team to enhance efficiency and improve current processes.
About the Role
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Filing EP/international and foreign patent applications, as well as related correspondence from filing to grant issuance.
- Managing EP and international patent filings and nationalizations into foreign jurisdictions.
- Preparing all documents in connection with EP, Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), and foreign applications; proactively initiating responses to official communications.
- Maintaining and sharing advanced knowledge of the latest patent rules and adapting practices accordingly.
- Daily monitoring and updating electronic dockets for responsible attorneys and assigned paralegal tasks.
- Proactively ensuring that all related deadlines are met in a timely manner.
- Conducting independent, critical reviews and maintenance of attorneys' dockets and workloads.
- Coordinating outsourcing and transfers of patent files to minimize the risk of rights loss.
- Communicating effectively with colleagues, inventors, foreign agents, and other associates.
- Actively participating in patent group and cross-divisional meetings as required.
- Providing flexible support in other areas within the Patent Support team as needed.
- Undertaking projects that address global prosecution and operational challenges.
- Leading teams in the development of procedures and processes.
- Conducting meetings as necessary and recommending areas for efficiency improvements.
What You'll Bring to the Role
- Relevant degree in Law, Paralegal, or equivalent IP certification or experience.
- Proficiency in English (spoken and written); additional languages are a plus.
- Demonstrated professional experience as a patent paralegal in a patent law firm or corporation, with international and foreign filing experience.
- Ability to manage a highly complex environment while maintaining a high-quality workload.
- Advanced knowledge of patent database and report-generating tools.
- Capacity to work independently and meet deadlines in an electronic office environment.
- Strong research, critical thinking, and sound decision-making skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to liaise with cross-divisional groups to ensure effective knowledge sharing.
- Leadership qualities and the capability to mentor and develop the technical competence of others.
- A commitment to advocating for the Patent Support team at NIBR sites.
