Job Opportunity: School Assistant (40% Contract)

Job start: 1 January 2026

Location: Basel, Switzerland

Contract term: Indefinite

ELA Basel is seeking a suitably qualified School Assistant to join our vibrant team starting on 1 January 2026. This position involves working core hours of 40%, from Monday to Thursday 15:00 - 18:00 and Fridays 13:00 - 18:00.

Qualifications:

  • Eligibility to work in Switzerland (Swiss and EU nationals and current permit holders)
  • Fluency in English
  • Knowledge of German is desirable but not mandatory

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Student Supervision:
    • Promote active and inclusive play while ensuring safety guidelines are adhered to.
    • Provide support during off-site activities, trips, and events.
    • Oversee students during breaks and lunch, ensuring a positive atmosphere.
    • Monitor student interactions and behavior, intervening when necessary to uphold school standards.
    • Build positive relationships with pupils, fostering their confidence and emotional well-being.
    • Support children in developing social skills and teamwork in line with school policies.
  • Classroom & Teacher Support:
    • Assist teachers with preparing classroom materials and maintaining a tidy environment.
    • Support the setup of learning activities in small groups as needed.
  • After School Programmes:
    • Plan and supervise engaging after school activities, ensuring safety and proper structure.
    • Maintain attendance registers to ensure accountability and child safeguarding.
    • Communicate details of programs and student involvement with parents and guardians.
  • Resource Management:
    • Manage the Resource Room, ensuring materials are organized and in good condition.
    • Oversee playground toys and equipment, maintaining safety and availability.
    • Ensure all activity areas are left organized and resources properly stored.
    • Keep an inventory of teaching resources and notify staff of restocking needs.
    • Manage Lost Property, ensuring that items are returned to students when possible.

School Assistants may also choose to lead or support the vacation programme, which includes an additional functional allowance.

Professional Development:

  • Participate in scheduled professional development programs.
  • Complete annual safeguarding and first aid training.

Working Hours:

This position requires 42 hours per week (for a full-time quota), with working hours from 7:30 to 18:00 as per the allocated schedule. All staff are expected to be ready at their scheduled start time.
