The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is a state-of-the-art research and training facility, collaboratively established by ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. Project Background

The FGCZ Proteomics Unit actively supports both internal and external research groups by delivering services, training, and instrument access. The analytical portfolio encompasses the identification, characterization, and quantification of proteins in body fluids, tissues, and cells. In collaboration with the Bioinformatics team, the Proteomics Unit manages all stages from initial consultation and experimental design to sample preparation, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) data acquisition, data processing, and data analysis. Our team is bolstered by IT and bioinformatics experts, alongside support from the Metabolomics and Genomics Units, to facilitate multi-omics approaches.

Job Description

  • Join an international team of specialists working in the FGCZ proteomics core facility.
  • Primarily support the team in sample preparation and data acquisition for various mass spectrometry-based proteomics workflows, focused on the identification, characterization, and quantification of peptides and proteins using LC-MS from diverse biological sources.
  • Your responsibilities will include routine sample preparation methods such as in-gel, on-beads, and in-solution digestion, as well as peptide desalting, evaluating and interpreting quality control features during and after data acquisition, and basic data analysis workflows.
  • Additionally, maintain different LC-MS instrument platforms and support practical organizational aspects of the proteomics laboratories. This position is initially offered as a two-year contract.

Profile

  • Completed professional training as a chemistry or biology laboratory technician, or alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in analytical chemistry, biology, or a closely related field.
  • Wet lab experience in biochemistry and/or analytical chemistry.
  • Hands-on experience with LC-MS and/or other protein analysis techniques is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills and the flexibility to adapt to a wide range of analytical protocols in a highly dynamic environment, with attention to detail and adherence to SOPs.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of German is beneficial.
  • A team player who is ambitious and motivated to learn, making a difference through proteomics and protein analysis.
