About Us

The "Stomatal Biology" group invites applications for a fully funded post-doctoral position (2 years, with potential for extension). Our research focuses on how grasses and succulents build and pattern their 'breathing pores' or stomata, utilizing single-cell genomics, live imaging, genetics, and protein biochemistry.

Based at the Institute of Plant Sciences, University of Bern, we operate at the intersection of plant developmental genetics, cell biology, and gas-exchange physiology. This research position is associated with the Cereal Stem Cell Systems research unit (RU52350).

Job Description

We are looking for a postdoc with a completed PhD in plant biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, or a related field. The ideal candidate should have:

  • Proficient written and oral English skills
  • Solid experience in (plant) molecular genetics, microscopy, and cell biology
  • Familiarity with model grass species, (plant) signaling, protein biochemistry, or single-cell/spatial transcriptomics (an advantage)
  • An open, collaborative mindset for working within the research unit

Research Focus

This project, funded by the SNSF and the DFG, aims to investigate how grass leaves spatially coordinate the development of their veins and stomata. Previous findings indicate that stomatal rows form alongside leaf veins, suggesting a critical relationship for water supply and demand. Despite this, the mechanisms behind this spatial coordination remain to be fully understood. Building on prior research, this project will leverage spatial genomics, imaging, genetics, and biochemistry to explore how these two tissues collaborate to position stomatal rows adjacent to leaf veins.
