Post-Doctoral Position in Stomatal Biology

UniBE is a prestigious institution known for its excellent global reputation. The University of Bern's Institute for Plant Sciences is calling for applications for a fully funded post-doctoral position in our "Stomatal Biology" group. This position is for a duration of two years, with the possibility of extension. The role will begin on October 1, 2026, or by arrangement.

About Us

Our research group focuses on understanding how grasses and succulents construct and pattern their stomata, or 'breathing pores.' We employ an array of techniques, including single-cell genomics, live imaging, genetics, and protein biochemistry. Our work lies at the intersection of plant developmental genetics, cell biology, and gas-exchange physiology, within the framework of the research unit "Cereal Stem Cell Systems - RU52350."

Position Overview

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a completed PhD in plant biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, or a related field. The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Proficient written and oral skills in English
  • Solid experience in (plant) molecular genetics, microscopy, and cell biology
  • Previous experience with model grass species, (plant) signaling, protein biochemistry, or single-cell/spatial transcriptomics (preferred)
  • An open and collaborative mindset to work within the research unit

Project Description

This project is funded by the SNSF and the DFG. It aims to explore the spatial coordination between the development of veins and stomata in grass leaves—an aspect critical for understanding water supply and demand dynamics. Building upon a previously established single-cell atlas of grass leaf development, the project will utilize advanced spatial genomics, imaging, genetics, and biochemistry methodologies to reveal how these two key plant tissues communicate.

What We Offer

  • A vibrant and inclusive research environment that tackles fundamental questions in plant development and physiology.
  • State-of-the-art research infrastructure located at the Institute of Plant Sciences in Bern, Switzerland.
  • Collaboration opportunities with the Microscope Imaging Centre and the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research.

Your Benefits

  • Strong research infrastructure and international network
  • Healthy corporate culture and a positive working atmosphere
  • Central location in the heart of Bern
  • Access to cutting-edge technology and innovation
