About the Project

We are seeking a fully-funded Postdoctoral Fellow to join the University of Bern's research team focusing on the atmospheres of transiting sub-Neptunes. The successful candidate will contribute to the SNSF-funded "Exo-Neptune Census," a project led by Assistant Professor Hugh Osborn, aimed at performing a population-level analysis of sub-Neptune radii, masses, and atmospheres. This research aims to deepen our understanding of the formation, composition, and evolution of these fascinating planetary bodies.

The Postdoc will primarily work on extracting atmospheric volatile abundances and bulk planetary volatile compositions from JWST observations of sub-Neptunes. The Exo-Neptune Census, funded for five years, involves PhD students engaged in detecting new Neptune-like exoplanets in photometric time series and characterizing them using various space- and ground-based facilities, including CHEOPS, HARPS, HARPS-N, and ESPRESSO. The group is enriched by the expertise of PD Dr. Daniel Kitzmann and Prof. Brice-Olivier Demory on atmospheric observations and retrievals, as well as Professors Yann Alibert and Christoph Mordasini who specialize in theoretical modeling of interior structures and planetary evolution. The successful Postdoc will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with these esteemed groups.

Your Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Expertise in applying Bayesian statistical methods to astronomical datasets.
  • Experience in modeling exoplanetary transits.
  • A deep understanding of atmospheric physics (including chemistry and radiative transfer).
  • A proven track record as an independent researcher.
  • Proficiency in extracting spectra from JWST time series data and retrieving abundances.
  • Additional theoretical expertise in linking sub-Neptune interiors with atmospheres.

The fellow will be expected to contribute to the project goals, while also enjoying ample protected time for independent research. The position includes generous travel support for attending international conferences and research visits. Teaching assistance at the University of Bern is expected, along with opportunities to supervise Master's projects and mentor PhD students.
