ETH Zurich - January 10, 2026

Postdoc Position in Development of In Vitro Skin Model Including Sensory Perception

100%, Basel, fixed-term

We are excited to announce an opening for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Postdoc for a collaborative project between the Bio Engineering Laboratory (Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich in Basel) and Novartis AG, Basel, Switzerland. This position offers a unique opportunity to work across scientific and organizational boundaries, focusing on the development of advanced skin models to study barrier function and itching, with the potential for significant therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

Project Background

The project is aimed at developing skin models that encompass sensory perception for understanding immunological skin diseases and applications in drug discovery. Leveraging cutting-edge cellular models, bioengineering, and microfluidic approaches, we aim to overcome the limitations of current ex vivo skin models, which are not capable of assessing itch-inducing and barrier-compromising conditions in real-time. Emerging models based on primary keratinocytes and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) promise better replication of physiological and disease conditions, though they need adaptation for pharmaceutical research and target identification.

Job Description

  • You will devise an in vitro 3D human skin model to investigate barrier function under homeostatic conditions and in response to inflammatory stimuli.
  • By combining state-of-the-art engineering and microfluidic approaches with innovative cellular models, you will develop new skin models that integrate sensory perception for applications in fundamental science and drug testing.
  • Your role will encompass setting up and culturing the 3D skin models, as well as optimizing sensor technology (e.g., TEER and TEWL) to enable a robust assessment of skin barrier functionality.
  • You will also study itch perception through the integration of iPSC-derived sensory neurons.

Profile

  • An ideal candidate will have a strong background in biology and engineering (e.g., bioengineering, biotechnology, or related fields) with solid knowledge of molecular biology and cell culturing, preferably in microphysiological systems.
  • Important experience includes primary cell culturing, work with advanced in vitro models, epithelial/endothelial barrier characterization, and iPSC differentiation. Skills in optical microscopy, sensor development, integration, and electrophysiology are advantageous.
  • Academic excellence, a professional attitude, and a self-driven nature are essential.
  • Strong communication skills, fluency in English, and a proactive mindset are critical for thriving in this collaborative, international environment.

Workplace

The position is fully funded for an initial term of 2 years, with the possibility of extension up to 4 years. The starting date is flexible but must be before June 2026.

We Offer

  • Your role will have a significant impact: Join ETH Zurich, an institution committed to your professional development while actively contributing to positive change in society.
  • Enjoy numerous benefits, such as public transport season tickets, car sharing, a wide range of sports offered by ASVZ, childcare, and attractive pension benefits.
