Postdoctoral Researcher in Development of a Microfluidic Platform for Diagnosis of Sepsis / Postdoctoral Researcheress in Development of a Microfluidic Platform for Diagnosis of Sepsis

ETH Zurich Zürich January 29, 2026

Postdoc Position in Development of a Microfluidic Platform for Diagnosis of Sepsis

100%, Basel, fixed-term

We are pioneering lab-on-chip technology (microfluidic technology) for applications across the life sciences and biomedicine. Our interdisciplinary approach involves the design and fabrication of miniaturized platforms, optimized for biochemical assays and analytical procedures.

For a third-party funded project set to run for four years, we are offering a position for a Postdoctoral Fellow.

Project Background

The RadiantDx project is a multidisciplinary collaboration focusing on the diagnosis of sepsis, a critical health condition characterized by nonspecific symptoms such as high fever. To assist healthcare providers in determining appropriate treatment, we aim to develop a miniaturized system for rapid diagnosis of sepsis. This initiative seeks to prevent unnecessary antibiotic use, ultimately enhancing patient survival and recovery. Collaborating with researchers from the Institute of Medical Microbiology at the University of Zurich, the Department of Informatics at ETH Zurich, and other partners, we tackle this challenge by integrating microfluidic technology, sequencing, and rapid data analysis.

Within the Bioanalytics Group, a PhD student and a Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate on various aspects of the microfluidic platform and sample preparation.

Job Description

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work closely with the PhD student on the following tasks:

  • Design and manufacture a microfluidic platform
  • Develop, optimize, and test biological assays
  • Perform imaging, data analysis, and interpretation
  • Prepare the platform for clinical usage
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participate actively in group meetings
  • Prepare reports and present results at research consortium meetings
  • Coordinate work with partners in the research consortium

Profile

  • PhD degree in fields related to microfluidics, microsystems engineering, biomedical engineering, or interdisciplinary study programs.
  • Candidates with backgrounds in biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, or microbiology with experience in method and technology development are also encouraged to apply.
  • The integration of biological and technological aspects is central to our group and this project. Candidates should have a strong willingness to learn and improve novel methods, openness to interdisciplinary research, and the ability to communicate effectively across disciplines.
  • Strong communication (in English) and teamwork skills.

Workplace

Our workplace offers a stimulating environment where innovation and collaboration thrive. You will engage with an interdisciplinary team that is dedicated to advancing science and technology.

We Offer

We offer the successful candidate:

  • An intellectually challenging position in an inspiring interdisciplinary team atmosphere
  • Opportunity to engage in multifaceted, applied work alongside computer scientists and clinicians/microbiologists
  • A chance to develop technology and methods closely aligned with patient needs, from bench to bedside
  • Development of personal skills including writing, presentation, and project management
  • Possibility to supervise students and engage in collaborative projects
