Postdoctoral Fellow / Postdoctoral Fellowess

Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - April 24, 2026

Your Tasks

In close collaboration with a team of experts at PSI and the University of Zurich, the postdoctoral candidate, alongside a PhD candidate, will work towards a significant expansion of the high-pressure capabilities at PSI. This will involve enabling measurements on substantially smaller samples at markedly higher pressures using diamond anvil cells and advanced uniaxial stress apparatus. The postdoc will play a key role in the development of innovative hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure cells as well as associated experimental methodologies, aiming to increase the accessible pressure range by at least a factor of three beyond the current world records at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). These advancements will unlock previously inaccessible regimes of quantum matter and facilitate the exploration of emergent phenomena under extreme conditions.

Within a collaborative team of principal investigators, postdocs, and PhD students, the candidate will engage in tuning and understanding unconventional quantum phenomena such as superconductivity, charge order, and magnetism in a variety of quantum materials. The goal is to identify common features in their phase diagrams and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. This research will be conducted in a highly international and interdisciplinary environment at PSI, providing opportunities to gain expertise in cutting-edge experimental techniques, high-pressure instrumentation, and fundamental topics in condensed-matter physics.

Your Profile

  • PhD degree in Experimental Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, or a closely related field
  • Strong expertise in quantum materials research or experience with uniaxial and/or hydrostatic pressure techniques is advantageous
  • Experience with -SR or other magnetic resonance techniques is a plus
  • Strong motivation to work on an interdisciplinary project that combines instrument development, experimental work, and theoretical research
  • Proficient in written and spoken English
  • Able to work effectively as part of an international research team
