Postdoctoral Fellow / Postdoctoral Fellowess

Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - April 21, 2026

Your Tasks

In close collaboration with a team of experts at PSI and the University of Zurich, the postdoctoral candidate, alongside a PhD candidate, will work towards a significant enhancement of the high-pressure capabilities of -SR at PSI. This project aims to enable measurements on dramatically smaller samples at significantly higher pressures utilizing diamond anvil cells and advanced uniaxial stress apparatus. The postdoc will contribute to the development of novel hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure cells and associated experimental methodologies, with the objective of increasing the accessible pressure range by at least a factor of three beyond current world records at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). Such advancements will unlock previously inaccessible regimes of quantum matter and facilitate the investigation of emergent phenomena under extreme conditions.

Within a team comprising principal investigators, postdocs, and PhD students, the candidate will focus on tuning and understanding unconventional quantum phenomena, including superconductivity, charge order, and magnetism in a variety of quantum materials. The goal is to identify common features in their phase diagrams and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. This research will take place in a highly international and interdisciplinary environment at PSI, where the candidate will gain expertise in cutting-edge experimental techniques, high-pressure instrumentation, and foundational topics in condensed-matter physics.

Your Profile

  • PhD degree in Experimental Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong expertise in quantum materials research or experience with uniaxial and/or hydrostatic pressure techniques is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with -SR or other magnetic resonance techniques is an advantage.
  • Strong motivation to engage in an interdisciplinary project that combines instrument development, experimental work, and theoretical analysis.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Adeptness at working effectively within an international research team.
