Photonics System Architect / Photonics System Architectess

Lightium AG Schlieren September 6, 2026

Join Our Team as a Photonics System Architect

Are you passionate about pushing the boundaries of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology? Lightium, a leading-edge photonics startup, is seeking a skilled Photonics System Architect to spearhead system-level design and requirements management for our internal and external customers utilizing Lightium’s proprietary thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform. This role provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the next generation of photonics solutions while collaborating with top transceiver manufacturers and optical interconnect hardware companies.

Position Summary

As a Photonics System Architect, you will define and implement system-level architectures alongside our customers and oversee Lightium’s reference designs from concept to schematic and layout using our TFLN-based technology. You will apply cutting-edge requirements-tracking methodologies and tools, ensuring success for our internal and external customers. Your contributions will be pivotal in achieving first-time-right design of complex, high-speed, electro-optical photonic integrated circuits (PICs).

Key Responsibilities

  • System Concepts and Architecture: Design optical on-chip communication systems based on customer requirements in coherent communication (C-band and O-band), intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD), quantum applications, radio over fiber (RoF), and passive optical networking (PON) systems. Develop system-level specifications and derive block-level specifications, driving schematic design and layout using state-of-the-art EDA tools. Conduct system- and circuit-level simulations and optimize parameters to meet target specifications while ensuring manufacturability and testability.
  • Relationship Management: Act as the key interface with external parties, including drivers/TIA suppliers, packaging and integration houses (OSATs), strategic DSP partners, and customers.
  • Requirements Management: Benchmark and implement requirements management tools, applying previously defined procedures and training colleagues in the system engineering space. Prior experience with PLM systems at an industrial level is advantageous for this role.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the R&D teams from design through optical testing and characterization, contributing to cross-functional projects that advance our TFLN technologies. Occasional travel to Lightium’s existing customers and prospects may be required.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain thorough documentation, report findings, establish standard operating procedures (SOPs), and train new colleagues.
  • Innovation: Stay updated on the latest advancements in photonics, incorporating new techniques and technologies into our R&D landscape and contributing to Lightium's IP portfolio.

What You’ll Bring

  • Educational Background: An advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Communications, Integrated Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience Level: Minimum of 5 years in RF and optical system design in integrated photonics (PICs), including ISO-compliant requirements management. Experience with integrated photonics platforms such as TFLN, silicon photonics, SiN, InP or similar, as well as knowledge of IEEE standards is preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in system-level design with simulation software packages such as Ansys Lumerical, GDSFactory, Luceda, PhotonDesign, Synopsis, Cadence or VPI Photonics. Strong understanding of system architectures in photonics, including coherent transmitters and receivers. Experience in quantum computing or optical communication towards satellites is a plus.
  • Organization & Documentation: Strong organizational skills to manage tasks across multiple facilities, maintaining confidentiality and following best practices.
  • Collaboration: Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively in a multidisciplinary team and with international clients. Cultural awareness for tailoring communication styles is essential.
  • Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, demonstrating flexibility and resilience.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English is required; proficiency in German, French, or an Asian language is an advantage.

What We Offer

  • A unique opportunity to lead a cutting-edge manufacturing initiative in the rapidly growing field of photonics.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package, including an employee stock option plan (ESOP), reflective of your experience and expertise.
  • The chance to become a key player in an early-phase startup, working with a motivated and energetic team while growing your professional skills at a rapid pace.
