Photonics Design Verification Engineer / Photon Design Verification Engineeress

Lightium AG Schlieren September 6, 2026

Join Our Team as a Photonics Design Verification Engineer

Are you passionate about pushing the boundaries of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology? Lightium, a leading-edge photonics startup, is seeking a skilled Photonics Design Verification Engineer to lead the verification of designs and establish new procedures for internal and external designs within our innovative thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the next generation of photonics solutions while collaborating with top customers in the optics and photonics field.

Position Summary

As a Photonics Design Verification Engineer, you will define, implement, and drive the design verification process aimed at advancing our TFLN-based PIC platforms. Your contributions will be vital in enhancing the design quality for Lightium’s internal and external customers across various sectors, including telecom, datacenter, AI, and quantum technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Procedures: Define, establish, and coach best-in-class design verification procedures for electro-optical circuits using leading photonics design software such as Luceda, GDSFactory, Synposis, and Cadence, in collaboration with respective EDA tool vendors.
  • Technical Work: Conduct hands-on design verification of high-speed designs exceeding 100 GHz bandwidth for internal and external customers, leveraging your strong background in optical chip design and microwave photonics.
  • Customer Engagement: Collaborate with leading tier-1 customers in the photonics space to ensure their designs are DRC clean, LVS clean, and align with system-level and block-level specifications.
  • Collaboration: Partner closely with R&D teams, from design to optical testing and characterization, to contribute to cross-functional projects that advance our TFLN technologies. Occasional travel to Lightium’s customers and test partners may be required.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain thorough documentation, report findings, establish standard operating procedures, and train new colleagues.
  • Innovation: Stay updated on the latest advancements in photonics and incorporate new techniques and technologies into our metrology landscape, contributing to Lightium’s IP portfolio.

What You’ll Bring

  • Educational Background: An advanced degree (PhD or MSc) in Communication, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years of work experience in chip design, photonic circuit design, layout, design verification, system engineering, or requirements tracking at an industrial scale, with prior experience in integrated photonics such as TFLN, silicon photonics, SiN, InP, or related platforms.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in design verification, design rule check (DRC), layout vs schematic (LVS), mask generation, and handling larger GDS files is essential. Experience with major EDA software like Luceda, GDSFactory, Cadence, Synopsis, and Siemens / Mentor Graphics is preferable.
  • Organization & Documentation: Strong organizational skills, enabling effective planning of work schedules across multiple facilities while adhering to guidelines and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Collaboration: Excellent communication skills to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and with international customers.
  • Adaptability: A proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment with flexibility and resilience in the face of change.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English is required; knowledge of German, French, or an Asian language is a plus.

What We Offer

  • A competitive compensation and benefits package, including an employee stock option plan (ESOP), fully-covered Pillar Two, and generous vacation.
  • A unique opportunity to lead a cutting-edge manufacturing initiative in the rapidly growing field of photonics.
  • A collaborative and innovative work environment where your contributions will shape the future of telecommunications, datacom, and beyond.
