Introduction

The Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich serves as a center of competence for both Swiss and international security policy and peace promotion. We offer extensive expertise in research, teaching, and consultancy aimed at enhancing global security and fostering peaceful relations.

Project Background

The Think Tank at the Center for Security Studies acts as a vital link between academia and practitioners in the realm of security policy. It serves as a point of contact and reference for the wider public. The Mediation and Peace Section of the Think Tank supports efforts to negotiate, mediate, and transform violent political conflicts through rigorous research, specialized training, and direct support for those engaged in peace practice and conflict transformation processes. We are currently seeking a dedicated individual to join us as a Program Officer for the “Mediation Support Project” (MSP), a collaboration between CSS ETH Zurich and swisspeace, in partnership with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). The MSP aims to bolster Swiss and international mediation efforts.

Job Description

The successful candidate will become a vital member of the Mediation and Peace Team, supporting and leading the implementation of MSP activities. Responsibilities will include:

  • Knowledge management and applied research related to mediation in peace processes
  • Designing and delivering negotiation and mediation training sessions and other capacity-building activities
  • Supporting the operation of mediation networks
  • Conducting conflict analysis
  • Facilitating dialogue, negotiation, and mediation activities
  • Working in conflict contexts
  • Training future mediators and peace practitioners
  • Providing training for parties in conflict situations
  • Coordinating MSP activities
  • Organizing MSP events and initiatives
  • Managing tasks related to the MSP program

Your Profile

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Relevant MA degree in Social Sciences or Humanities (e.g., peace and conflict studies, political science, sociology, anthropology, or environment)
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in mediation, mediation support, project management, or applied research in the peace and conflict field
  • Experience working and living in conflict-affected contexts, with practical support in mediation processes
  • Experience in writing, publishing, and editing applied research
  • Work experience in international organizations, NGOs, or think tanks related to mediation and support efforts
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • A curious, cooperative, and independent personality
  • Proactive approach to tasks
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Willingness to travel, including to conflict-affected regions
  • Excellent proficiency in English is required; knowledge of at least one Swiss national language is a significant advantage
  • Additional language skills are beneficial
