Machine Learning Scientist / Machine Learning Scientistess

ETH Zürich - April 1, 2026

Join the Center for Climate Systems Modeling at ETH Zurich

The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) at ETH Zurich, in collaboration with the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss), is pioneering innovative methods to leverage machine learning for numerical weather forecasting and climate modeling.

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated Machine Learning Scientist to join the WeatherGenerator project. Similar to the approach used in Large Language models, the WeatherGenerator aims to create a foundation model for weather and climate forecasting. This model will be trained on a variety of datasets, including satellite and radar data, with the core model being fine-tuned for specific applications, such as high-resolution predictions over Switzerland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Further develop and train the WeatherGenerator model for specific applications in Switzerland, focusing on high-resolution regional weather predictions.
  • Enhance the system by integrating observational and high-resolution model data.
  • Fine-tune and validate the model against existing numerical models and observations.
  • Curate and validate ML training datasets.
  • Integrate the machine learning pipeline into production.

Qualifications

  • University degree (MSc or PhD) in data science, computer science, physics, or a related field.
  • Experience in training and validating large-scale deep-learning models on distributed systems.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with a modern ML stack (e.g., PyTorch, Hydra, Zarr, Dask).
  • Experience in handling and processing large datasets or high-performance computing (HPC) is an advantage.
  • Experience with weather and climate applications is a plus.
  • Creative, solution-oriented, and possess excellent communication skills with the ability to work within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

What We Offer

  • Unique opportunities to develop cutting-edge machine learning systems and shape the future of weather forecasting.
  • A dynamic team environment operating at the intersection of advanced research and real-world applications.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace with flexible working arrangements that promote work-life balance for all team members.

This position is limited to two years. Apply online using the form below. Only applications matching the job profile will be considered.
