The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution at ETH Zurich is seeking a motivated and skilled technician to support the analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) samples. Our laboratory is an international research team with diverse scientific expertise, united by a shared goal: to understand and preserve biodiversity. We investigate the mechanisms that shape biodiversity patterns across different spatial and temporal scales within terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, focusing on how they respond to global changes.

To achieve our goals, we collect data through biological monitoring, environmental DNA methods, remote sensing, and field sampling, utilizing these data to address pressing questions using statistical and process-based models of biological diversity. We are dedicated to translating scientific findings and novel technologies into practical environmental solutions, contributing to tackling significant environmental challenges.

About the Role

In this vital role, you will primarily focus on a wide range of molecular laboratory tasks, especially the processing of eDNA samples. Responsibilities will include:

• Performing DNA extraction in a clean laboratory setting, PCR, and library preparation for high-throughput sequencing.
• Supporting the maintenance and organization of the eDNA biobank and preparing sampling kits for field campaigns.
• Assisting colleagues in eDNA extractions and library preparations.
• Managing the entire workflow from equipment preparation to sample reception, library preparation, and sequencing organization.
• Ensuring high standards of cleanliness and contamination control in the lab.

You will have the opportunity to contribute to impactful ecological research aimed at halting biodiversity loss and promoting positive actions for nature. This is a fixed-term position associated with a project lasting four years.

Your Qualifications

We encourage applications from well-organized, precise, and motivated individuals who possess proven experience in molecular biology. The ideal candidate will have:

• A completed training as a laboratory technician or equivalent education in molecular biology or a related field.
• Hands-on experience with molecular techniques, including DNA extraction (preferably from environmental samples), PCR, and library preparation.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• The ability to follow established protocols accurately and consistently.
• A team-oriented mindset with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Fluency in English (spoken and written).

Additional strengths include flexibility in a dynamic research environment, capacity for independent problem-solving, and a willingness to travel to conduct DNA extractions and train collaborators.
