Job Opportunity: Interaction Designer

We are seeking a creative Interaction Designer to craft compelling visual experiences and digital assets. In this role, you will transform complex data and concepts into clear, engaging visuals while collaborating closely with our engineering team to bring innovative ideas to life.

The scope of work may consist of 60% for one project, but with the right candidate and skill set, it could extend to 100% for two projects. Join us as we partner with both academia and industry on groundbreaking visualization projects at the IVIA lab, focusing on interactive human-AI collaboration interfaces aimed at effective problem-solving and decision-making.

The ideal candidate will possess a structured and hands-on approach, thriving in a small, interdisciplinary team environment. This fixed-term position is available for one year.

Responsibilities

  • Design and create digital assets, including icons, SVGs, illustrations, and logos.
  • Develop interactive widgets and visualizations to explain complex content, integrating gamification elements such as storytelling, user flow, and seamless state transitions.
  • Create mockups, wireframes, and prototypes using Figma, Penpot, or similar tools.
  • Design modern, visually appealing web layouts and UI components.
  • Produce data visualizations—static, animated, or interactive—using tools like d3.js.
  • Collaborate with developers to ensure a seamless translation of designs into code.
  • Contribute to brand identity by developing logos, visual guidelines, and style systems.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Interaction Design, Visual Communication, Graphic Design, or a related field.
  • A background as a Motion Designer, 2D Animator, or Digital Illustrator/Animator is highly valued.
  • A mandatory Portfolio showcasing past projects relevant to the requirements (web design, gamification, animation, and interactive visuals) is required with your application.
  • Proficiency in design tools, including Figma, Penpot, and Adobe Creative Suite (especially After Effects); experience with the Affinity Suite is a plus.
  • Experience creating SVG assets and vector graphics for the web.
  • Familiarity with HTML/CSS and basic frontend concepts; experience with Onlook is a plus.
  • Knowledge of d3.js or other visualization libraries is a strong plus.
  • Experience with real camera recording embeddings is a plus but not mandatory.
  • An eye for typography, color, and layout.
  • Ability to distill complex information into clear visual narratives.
  • Experience with research or scientific communication is advantageous.
  • A proactive, creative thinker who enjoys iterative design processes.
  • Demonstrated fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential; proficiency in German is beneficial.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to have a meaningful impact as part of ETH Zurich, which supports your professional development while contributing positively to society.
  • An interesting and varied role within dynamic and innovative organizations.
  • Collaboration within a highly committed multidisciplinary team.
  • Regular meetings and close collaboration with Sinergia project partners.
  • Attractive benefits, including public transport season tickets, car sharing, access to a variety of sports offered by ASVZ, childcare, and pension benefits.
