Job opportunity

Cleanroom Fabrication Engineer / Cleanroom Fabrication Engineeress

ETH Zürich Zürich October 27, 2026

Introduction

At the Quantum Device Lab, led by Prof. Andreas Wallraff in the Department of Physics at ETH Zurich, we fabricate advanced quantum devices utilizing cutting-edge micro- and nanofabrication techniques. Our goal is to conduct state-of-the-art experimental research in quantum information science and technology, with a strong focus on scaling these technologies to develop large-scale error-corrected quantum computers. We operate across various cleanrooms in the Zurich area and are dedicated to fostering new technologies and methodologies that stem from a coherent and far-sighted vision. Our team closely collaborates with both academic and industrial partners within the quantum community.

Project Background

We are seeking a Cleanroom Fabrication Engineer to join our interdisciplinary team at the forefront of quantum technologies. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing quantum processor chips, which will incorporate tens to hundreds of qubits. A primary objective will be to scale micro-fabricated chips, including the creation of Through-Silicon-Vias (TSVs) that connect the front and back surfaces of the chips with high-quality superconducting films. This innovation will mitigate the influence of parasitic box modes and enable alternative signal routing paths, facilitating the scaling of device sizes.

Job Description

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Device Fabrication: Implementing and refining micro and nano-fabrication processes.
  • Process Development: Optimizing novel fabrication processes for scalable architectures, including high-aspect-ratio TSVs using deep reactive-ion etching and conformal coating.
  • Yield Improvement: Conducting systematic metrology inspections to continuously enhance fabrication yield.
  • High-Coherence Compatibility: Collaborating with other fabrication engineers and measurement researchers to assess the impact of processes on qubit coherence metrics and ensure high-quality device outputs.
  • Documentation: Preparing thorough technical and scientific documentation of your work and maintaining run logs and process metrics to share with lead scientists in the Quantum Device Lab.

Your Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated fabrication engineer to lead the fabrication and process development of devices that enhance our capabilities in large-scale quantum computing.

Candidates should possess experience in an academic and/or industrial setting in several of the following areas:

  • Hands-on Cleanroom Experience: Proven expertise with semiconductor processing techniques, including electron beam lithography, photolithography, dry and wet etching, and thin film deposition.
  • Process Control: Surface characterization, metrology (optical, scanning-electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy), material science, statistical process control, yield improvement, and failure analysis.
  • Specialized Equipment: Practical technical knowledge of vacuum technology (pumps, UHV systems, etc.), leak detection, or cryogenic systems.
  • Research Experience: Ability to present and report high-quality research findings.

Further requirements include:

  • Strong communication skills for collaborating in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • High attention to detail, structured work habits, and the ability to manage complex workflows.
  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in micro- and nanofabrication, material science, physics, electrical engineering, or a related field. A PhD is advantageous but not required.
  • Excellent English communication skills; knowledge of German is a plus.

We Offer

Join us for an in-depth experience in the rapidly evolving field of quantum technology, where you will tackle a wide range of fabrication challenges while enjoying ample learning opportunities.

You will thrive in a collaborative, interdisciplinary R&D environment that promotes a rewarding and inspiring workplace characterized by a flat hierarchy and an open culture, all within a diverse international team.

Access to state-of-the-art cleanroom fabrication facilities at ETH Hönggerberg (FIRST), IBM Rüschlikon (BRNC), and PSI Villigen (PICO) will enhance your experience.
