The NCCR CLIM+ is a groundbreaking National Center of Competence in Research, dedicated to creating the first fully interdisciplinary, Switzerland-wide climate research community. This initiative addresses urgent issues related to climate extremes, such as heatwaves, floods, heavy rainfalls, droughts, and wildfires, while engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, including public health, finance, agriculture, and water management. Our goal is to produce actionable climate solution pathways related to adaptation and mitigation, forming a new transdisciplinary nexus that bridges science, society, practice, and politics.
NCCR CLIM+ is spearheaded by ETH Zurich and the University of Bern, encompassing 20 partner institutions across Switzerland. Led at ETH Zurich by Prof. Sonia I. Seneviratne and Prof. David N. Bresch, the project involves 17 professors and research groups across eight departments. The University of Bern contributes with co-director Prof. Karin Ingold and deputy co-director Prof. Olivia Romppainen-Martius. In total, NCCR CLIM+ partners with 57 institutions in Switzerland. The first phase of the project is set to run until April 30, 2030, with possibilities for extension for an additional 4-8 years. NCCR CLIM+ will also oversee the establishment of the newly founded Center for Climate Extremes and Resilience in Swiss Society (CERESS).
