Summary
This role is available in Basel, Switzerland, or in Cambridge, MA, and East Hanover, NJ, US. This position follows a hybrid working model.
The Novartis Strategy & Growth, Therapeutic Area Strategy team for Oncology is seeking a new Therapeutic Area Strategy Director, Oncology & Hematology. The successful candidate will support the development and updating of a holistic Therapeutic Area (TA) strategy; provide early-phase commercial insights to project teams; guide TA-specific internal pipeline development; identify external licensing and acquisition opportunities; and support integrated enterprise alignment across various units including Biomedical Research (BR), Development, Strategy & Growth (S&G), and the Commercial US and International units.
About the Role
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the TA Strategy Head in developing a holistic Novartis TA strategy aimed at achieving sustainable growth across short, mid, and long-term horizons using external benchmarking, analysis, and insights.
- Utilize an in-depth understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and core Therapeutic Areas (TA), particularly in Oncology & Hematology, to derive competitive advantages over peers.
- Provide vital commercial insights to R&D project teams, particularly for early-phase programs, leveraging significant in-market experience in the US.
- Analyze reports and publications to extract key insights, including constructing product forecasts.
- Support the creation and delivery of TA-specific strategic external insights to help identify growth opportunities and emerging competitive challenges.
Essential Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required; an advanced degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) in life sciences/healthcare is highly preferred. MBA or consulting experience is also desirable.
- Extensive knowledge of Therapeutic Areas, particularly in Oncology and Hematology, or the ability to quickly acquire necessary expertise.
- Highly adaptable, capable of supporting multiple strategic disease areas within a TA and various internal and external programs.
- Significant experience in evaluating new product opportunities through M&A, business development & licensing, and internal research programs.
- At least 5-7 years of experience in the pharmaceutical/medical devices industry, particularly in Research & Development and/or commercial functions, with demonstrated experience in conducting and analyzing primary research.
- Experience in strategy development and asset shaping, particularly early in the product lifecycle.
- Recent (post-2015) local US in-market experience, including collaborations with US customers and healthcare systems.
