Summary

This role will follow a hybrid working model with opportunities based in Basel, Switzerland; Cambridge, MA; or East Hanover, NJ, US.

The Novartis Strategy & Growth, Therapeutic Area Strategy team for Oncology is seeking a new Therapeutic Area Strategy Director for Oncology & Hematology. This position will support the development and update of a comprehensive TA strategy, provide early-phase commercial insights to project teams, guide TA-specific internal pipeline development, and explore external licensing/acquisition opportunities. The role also supports integrated enterprise alignment across Biomedical Research (BR), Development, Strategy & Growth (S&G), and both the Commercial US and International units.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide external benchmarking, analysis, insights, and judgment to assist the TA Strategy Head in developing a holistic Novartis TA strategy aimed at achieving sustainable growth.
  • Utilize a thorough understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and core Therapeutic Areas (TA), specifically in Oncology & Hematology, to identify and leverage competitive advantages.
  • Deliver key commercial insights to R&D project teams, particularly for early-phase programs, drawing on critical in-market experience in the US.
  • Analyze reports and publications to extract key messages and construct product forecasts.
  • Support the identification of growth opportunities and emerging competitive challenges by developing and delivering TA-specific strategic external insights, as well as commissioning targeted primary research.

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree (PhD, MD, or other advanced university degree) and/or equivalent experience in life sciences/healthcare is highly preferred, along with an MBA or consulting experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of Oncology and Hematology; ability to rapidly acquire required TA knowledge.
  • Demonstrated agility to support multiple strategic disease areas and programs, both internal and external.
  • Substantial experience in evaluating new product opportunities through M&A, BD&L, and internal research programs.
  • 5-7 years of industry experience in pharmaceuticals and/or medical devices, encompassing functions in Research & Development and/or commercial sectors, including conducting and analyzing primary research.
  • Experience in strategy development and asset shaping during the early stages of the lifecycle.
  • Recent (post-2015) local market experience in the US, which includes engagement with local customers and healthcare systems.
