Job Purpose

The ideal candidate for this position will be a native French speaker with a specialization in IB Language B, and ideally possess experience in teaching Language A (Language & Literature). The successful candidate will also have prior experience in teaching IGCSE French and DELF, and should exhibit flexibility in teaching across all age ranges. The school is open to all applications from inspirational candidates.

The World Languages department is comprised of 20 full-time and part-time teachers committed to collaboration, sharing best practices, and adopting an innovative approach to language education. Our department aims to promote diversity and multilingualism. We offer a rich variety of languages, including French, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, German, and Spanish, as well as opportunities for students to study Arabic, Portuguese, and more.

Teachers are accountable to their respective Head of Department/Faculty for the effective management of their classes and the development of student performance. All teachers are expected to make a substantial contribution to the life and work of the school. Below are the key areas of responsibility for this role, with additional responsibilities assigned as necessary at the reasonable request of the School Director.

This job description complements the basic duties outlined in the Aiglon College contract of employment, in line with the school's policies and guiding principles, and under the direction of the School Director.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

A - Guiding Principles and Professional Standards

  • Fulfill teaching duties and responsibilities in accordance with the school’s Guiding Principles and the Guiding Principles for Learning.
  • Inspire and engage students, treating all community members—colleagues and students—with respect.
  • Exemplify appropriate dress, punctuality, and attendance as a model for students.
  • Implement all school policies and procedures, particularly regarding the safeguarding of children and young people.
  • Uphold the ethos of the school and the behaviour code at all times.
  • Engage in professional development initiatives and participate in weekly INSET programs.
  • Reflect on personal practices and seek continuous improvement.
  • Participate in school operations through attendance at department and full-school meetings.
  • Fulfill pastoral duties as prescribed by school policies.
  • Meet all deadlines as published in the school calendar and directed by the Head of Department, Deputy School Director, or School Director.
  • Perform professional duties reasonably assigned (e.g., cover and exam invigilation).
  • Attend Assembly/Meditation at least twice a week per term and be prepared to lead a Meditation session once each term.
  • Proactively manage matters related to health and safety.
  • Support the school by attending events in the school calendar, whether spiritual, sporting, or cultural.
  • Actively participate in the school’s Character Education program.
  • Undertake any other responsibilities as reasonably required by the Deputy School Director.

B - Teaching and Tutoring

  • Teach an average of 21 academic lessons per week according to departmental schemes and programs of study.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on planning units of work for joint delivery.
  • Work with Aiglon's support program for students with specific learning needs as directed.
  • Set targets for student improvement based on prior attainment and baseline data.
  • Provide assignments for students absent due to health, disciplinary, or other reasons.
  • Thoroughly prepare students for public examinations, including marking and moderating coursework as required.
  • Promote the use of technology for learning.
  • Maintain discipline and set high expectations for student behavior, fostering a constructive working atmosphere.
  • Set appropriate expectations for students' learning and presentation of work according to school policies.
  • If applicable, tutor in an assigned Boarding House, ensuring best practices in pastoral care.
  • Engage with parents of tutees as outlined by the Director of Boarding and Assistant Heads.
  • Meet with tutees individually on a weekly basis.
  • Assume house duties, typically including regular weekday lunchtime and evening duties, along with about 10-12 weekend duties per year.

C - Assessment, Recording & Reporting

  • Keep detailed records of lessons taught and students' work.
  • Mark and return assignments within an agreed timeframe, providing constructive feedback and future learning targets.
  • Participate in formative and summative assessments in alignment with school policy.
  • Familiarize yourself with procedures related to Special Educational Needs and other support requirements.
  • Take part in the school’s assessment system and provide detailed reports on students per the reporting cycle.
  • Assist a maximum of three students annually in their IB Extended Essay process.
  • Write recommendation letters for students applying to university.
  • Attend parents' meetings as scheduled in the school calendar.
  • Facilitate effective communication by forwarding necessary documentation to relevant staff.
  • Contribute to the department’s involvement in the school’s marketing efforts.
  • Uphold the reputation of Aiglon College in all public dealings.

D - Co-Curricular Duties

  • Contribute to the school’s activities program weekly in collaboration with the Activities Coordinator.
  • Participate in the Expeditions program, including Long Expeditions during Winter and Summer as per the Deputy School Director’s guidance.
  • Contribute to the annual Aiglon Discovery Trips (ADT) in consultation with the Deputy School Director.
