The Mobile Robotics Lab (MRL) at ETH Zürich is at the forefront of advancing robot intelligence. Our ambition is to develop robots capable of safely exploring, navigating, and interacting with their environments. We are particularly focused on how learned perception can drive action in a closed loop and how we can utilize foundation models to achieve long-term autonomy. To support this vision, we are seeking a skilled lab technician/engineer with expertise in both hardware and software development.

Job Description

  • Design & Development: Design custom (embedded) hardware (CAD/PCB) and software solutions (Python/C/C++) tailored to the specific requirements of our cutting-edge research and educational courses.
  • Educational Support: Provide technical mentorship for student initiatives (e.g., Focus Projects), guiding students through hardware-software integration and prototyping.
  • Production & Integration: Assemble, integrate, and commission robotic systems; conduct functional tests, calibrations, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintenance & Support: Maintain robotic systems post-deployment and document all technical configurations and test protocols.
  • Logistics & Procurement: Oversee component procurement, supplier relations, and inventory control for production and laboratory stock.
  • Safety & Compliance: Act as the safety responsible; implement laboratory regulations, conduct risk assessments, and manage safety audits and onboarding.

Profile

  • Education: A degree or advanced vocational training in Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Technical Expertise: Hands-on experience in assembling and maintaining complex robotic systems, with a solid understanding of mechanical, electrical, software, and control components.
  • Laboratory Skills: Proficiency with measurement tools, calibration procedures, and structured technical reporting.
  • Organization: Highly structured and detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple priorities in a dynamic research environment.
  • Communication: A strong sense of responsibility and the confidence to effectively lead safety training and instruct students and researchers.
  • Mindset: A proactive, solution-oriented "hands-on" mentality with the ability to work independently.
