Technical Expert / Technical Expertess

ETH Zürich - June 7, 2025

Join Our Team as a Technical Expert in Experimental Solid Mechanics

The Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) at the Institute for Virtual Manufacturing (IVP) is seeking a highly experienced Technical Expert specialized in Experimental Solid Mechanics. We are looking for a senior individual with a strong background in mechanical testing and mechanical design who is eager to contribute to cutting-edge research with significant industrial relevance.

About IVP

IVP conducts academic research at the highest international level while maintaining strong ties with industry. Our research addresses critical challenges in the mechanics of materials and structures, focusing on their manufacturing processes and behavior under severe loading conditions. A key focus of our work is the development of digital twins—virtual models of mechanical systems that evolve alongside their physical counterparts throughout their operational life cycle.

Your Role

In this role, you will lead projects centered on the design and development of innovative experimental testing systems and their digital counterparts. You will be responsible for:

  • Conception, execution, and management of experimental platforms, including high-strain-rate systems such as Split Hopkinson bars.
  • Interpreting mechanical tests using techniques like Digital Image Correlation and stress wave analysis.
  • Developing custom material subroutines within finite element software to accurately reflect experimental observations.

This is a hands-on position requiring high manual dexterity and technical versatility. You will frequently switch between diverse tasks such as computational modeling, computer-aided design, manual and CNC machining, and experimental testing on small-scale components. As a key member of our team, your contributions will span from concept to implementation, focusing on the mechanical characterization of advanced materials and the design of original testing devices.

Collaboration and Mentorship

You will collaborate closely with professors, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate and undergraduate students. Your responsibilities will include mentoring student projects, coordinating with scientific staff, and presenting complex technical solutions to our industrial partners. Additionally, you will assist in preparing technical proposals and quotations for mechanical testing services provided by IVP.

Qualifications

This position is suited for candidates with a Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. We seek someone with:

  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental solid mechanics, mechanical design, and dynamic material testing.
  • Deep understanding of solid mechanics, experience with CAD and FEA tools, and proficiency in machining.
  • Solid hands-on experience in building and maintaining experimental facilities.
  • Familiarity with advanced experimental and machining techniques is highly valued.

Your Impact

Joining the IVP means becoming a part of ETH Zurich, an institution that not only supports your professional development but also actively contributes to positive societal change. We are committed to a sustainable and climate-neutral university, and you can expect numerous benefits, including:

  • Public transport season tickets and car sharing.
  • A wide range of sports offered by the ASVZ.
  • Childcare and attractive pension benefits.
