At the Energy and Process Systems Engineering (EPSE) group, we develop automated experimental setups for measuring vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE), liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE), and diffusion coefficients—key data for designing and optimizing chemical processes. Our group is creating miniaturized systems that employ in-situ Raman spectroscopy to rapidly determine phase compositions in small sample volumes, addressing the time- and resource-intensive nature of conventional experiments, especially for multicomponent mixtures.
The current project focuses on advancing our automated platforms for measuring thermophysical properties. We aim to integrate sample preparation, handling, and fully automated execution of equilibrium and transport-property experiments, utilizing milli- and microfluidic setups alongside Raman spectroscopy. The automatically generated data are crucial for the accelerated design of novel chemical processes, including plastic recycling.
We are seeking an ETH student interested in designing and building suitable experimental setups, conducting experiments, and assisting with general lab tasks starting around February 2026. Typical tasks include:
