The Inequality and Public Economics section at KOF Swiss Economic Institute is seeking a dedicated Student Assistant (30%).

Job Description

In this role, you will contribute to an ongoing research project focused on intergenerational mobility in Switzerland, investigating social mobility through various dimensions. This includes analyzing income mobility and related outcomes across generations, with a specific emphasis on gender differences, career trajectories, and perceptions of intergenerational mobility. The project is led by Dr. Isabel Z. Martínez and utilizes extensive administrative and survey data from Switzerland.

This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain insights into empirical research and actively contribute to the daily operations of a research team.

Your Tasks Include:

  • Supporting general research activities related to intergenerational mobility in Switzerland
  • Analyzing data primarily using the statistical software Stata
  • Conducting cluster analysis using Python or R
  • Executing literature searches and summarizing relevant academic research
  • Assisting with the design, implementation, and evaluation of internal surveys

The preferred starting date for this position is March 2026, with the possibility of a later start date.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated individual interested in gaining experience in applied empirical research. Ideal candidates will possess:

  • A strong interest in applied microeconomic research, particularly in inequality and intergenerational mobility in Switzerland
  • A completed bachelor’s degree (or nearing completion) or ongoing master’s degree in economics or another quantitative social science, with significant coursework or formal training in data science/econometrics
  • Basic knowledge of the statistical software Stata and a strong willingness to enhance methodological skills
  • Basic knowledge of Python or R and an demonstrated interest in machine learning methods, especially related to cluster analysis
  • Fluency and excellent writing skills in English
  • Knowledge of German and/or French is an advantage

Applicants must be enrolled at a Swiss university and be willing to work on-site at KOF for 1 to 2 days per week (maximum of 15 hours weekly during the semester). At KOF, we offer flexible working hours, allowing you to balance your responsibilities with your studies. During semester breaks, it is possible to work up to 41 hours per week.
