Student Assistant for the BEACH and FEAR project (masculine: Student Assistant, feminine: Student Assistant)

ETH Zurich - February 25, 2026

Student Assistant for the BEACH and FEAR Project in Bedretto Underground Laboratory

Location: Zurich, Fixed-term (10%-30%)

The BedrettoLab (Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geosciences and Geoenergies) is an innovative research facility operated by ETH Zurich. Nestled within a 5.2-kilometer-long tunnel in the Bedretto Valley (TI), this state-of-the-art lab provides ideal conditions for conducting experimental studies on earthquake nucleation, geothermal reservoir development, and geobiology. The BedrettoLab plays a pivotal role in creating advanced methods and sensors for geothermal energy exploitation, earthquake physics, and the monitoring of microbial community dynamics underground. Our team comprises approximately 30 ETH scientists from various disciplines, collaborating with several research institutions across Switzerland, Europe, and the USA.

Project Background

The advertised role involves significant time spent working in the underground tunnel, focusing on three primary tasks:

  • You will assist with general fieldwork in the BedrettoLab, particularly sampling for the BEACH (Bedretto Energy Storage and Circulation of Geothermal Energy) and FEAR (Fault Activation and Earthquake Rupture) projects. BEACH seeks to demonstrate and develop fractured thermal energy storage (FTES) as a new technology for energy storage in Switzerland, using the Bedretto tunnel as a model system. The FEAR project aims to understand how earthquakes start and stop by using hydraulic stimulation to modify stress and initiate small, non-damaging earthquakes (magnitude ~1.0 events) on candidate faults near the Bedretto Tunnel. This includes groundwater sampling and filtering for DNA or dissolved organic matter (DOM) extraction, employing submersible or peristaltic pumps, along with collecting sub-samples for water chemistry, isotope, and radiocarbon analyses.
  • In the context of BEACH and FEAR, you will regularly monitor water parameters such as electrical conductivity (EC), pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), temperature, and total dissolved solids (TDS) using handheld and automatic probes. Your responsibilities will include installing and maintaining these instruments, conducting regular calibrations, and managing data acquisition.
  • The BEACH and FEAR boreholes connect to the tunnel's fracture system and may be influenced by surface water infiltration. To evaluate changes in the Bedretto groundwater and differentiate autochthonous from allochthonous changes, you will regularly sample additional fractures along the tunnel and surface water sources. Assistance may also be required for additional fracture sampling and surface sampling during the summer.

Job Description

We are looking for students, preferably in their first year of a Master's program in Earth Sciences or Biology, to support the BedrettoLab team with the following:

  • Groundwater sampling for DNA and Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) extraction and water chemistry analysis.
  • Measurement of water parameters such as EC, ORP, pH, Temperature, and TDS.
  • Data acquisition using borehole logging techniques and rock core scanning devices.
  • Data analysis with standard software (e.g., Wellcad - training will be provided).
  • Data and metadata storage in our databases.
  • Transport of field equipment between Zurich and Bedretto.
  • Occasionally guiding scientific guests in the tunnel.
  • Possible extension into a spinoff Master's Thesis is highly encouraged.

Profile

  • You possess good manual skills and are prepared to work in the unique environment of the BedrettoLab.
  • A valid driver's license is expected, along with flexibility in your schedule, a collaborative spirit, and readiness for physical work.
  • Proficiency in English or German is required; knowledge of Italian is an asset.
  • You can start as soon as possible.
  • You must be enrolled at ETH Zurich or UniZurich and be willing to work an average of 15 hours per week during the semester.
  • Working hours during semester breaks can increase up to 40 hours per week.
  • We offer flexible work arrangements, allowing you time to study for exams or meet other academic obligations while coordinating with the team on task deadlines. Ideally, we seek individuals who can remain as student assistants for at least one year, with the possibility of extension.

Workplace

The BedrettoLab is a vibrant location where cutting-edge research is carried out within an interdisciplinary team.

We Offer

  • A strongly interdisciplinary team with excellent support and friendly colleagues.
  • A welcoming work environment that encourages innovative ideas.
  • The opportunity to gain insights into leading-edge interdisciplinary Earth Science research projects.
  • Standard ETH student RA salary.
