Strategic Sourcing and Supplier Manager

Keywords: Strategic Sourcing, Technical Fluency, High Tech, English

Background

Advancements in AI, data science, and computational technologies are revolutionizing drug discovery and development. Roche’s Research and Early Development organizations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have showcased how these innovations accelerate R&D efforts, utilizing data and novel computational models to create significant impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are crucial for maximizing these opportunities.

The newly established Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CS CoE) is a unified strategic group aimed at harnessing the transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to support our scientists in pRED and gRED, ultimately delivering more innovative and impactful medicines to patients worldwide. Within the CS CoE, the Portfolio & Operations team drives core operations, portfolio strategy, administration, budget planning, vendor management, and informatics operations, including cloud and software expenditure management. This team serves as both the strategic catalyst and operational backbone for the CS CoE, enabling enhanced business performance, transparency, and accountability.

As our projects evolve and our investment in contractors, consultants, and managed services expands, we have a significant opportunity to transition from reactive purchasing to a strategic, data-driven sourcing model. We are seeking an experienced professional to lead the Supplier Landscape & Taxonomy Initiative, supporting the transition to a centralized Contract, Procurement & Licensing (CPL) operating model, which will enable structured intake, governance, and supplier strategy.

The Perfect Candidate

We are looking for a strategic sourcing professional with over 5 years of experience in high-tech environments, supported by a degree in Business, Supply Chain, Data Science, or a related field. The ideal candidate combines a data architect mindset with strong technical fluency, empowering them to transform complex datasets into clear, actionable sourcing strategies.

With a solid understanding of computational science and a highly adaptable approach, the right candidate can rapidly learn new domains and drive data-driven decisions.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Spend Taxonomy & Classification: Lead the development of a custom spend taxonomy and classification model, establishing clear definitions across service categories to enhance cost control, vendor segmentation, and strategic sourcing initiatives.
  • Data Curation & Enrichment: Curate and enrich data by reviewing the existing inventory of external contractors and consultants, aligning them to defined procurement categories.
  • Strategic Consolidation: Collaborate with teams and procurement to identify synergies within our supplier landscape, designing a consolidation strategy that maximizes our leverage and simplifies administrative processes.
  • Operational Bridge: Align with Portfolio & Operations teams to streamline the data flow between the supplier landscape and our budget frameworks for maximum efficiency.
  • Develop Training: Work with the organization to upskill key roles in supplier and vendor management.
  • Landscape Mapping: Create a comprehensive map of all external resources, ensuring full transparency and clarity on roles and responsibilities.
  • Service Catalog Development: Develop a standardized catalog of buying categories that align with the technical needs of Computational Science.
  • Stakeholder Interviewing: Engage with Subject Matter Experts to translate technical roles into functional sourcing categories.
  • Proposal for Strategy: Present a data-driven category strategy for the Computational Science portfolio, defining the future-state sourcing model and establishing recommendations for preferred supplier panels.
  • Rate Card Benchmarking: Analyze rate structures to identify the most effective sourcing channels, ensuring optimal value for specialized skill sets.
  • Supplier Risk Profiling: Partner with Global Procurement to create a risk-assessment framework evaluating our supplier landscape, ensuring a resilient balance between specialized partners and scalable service providers.
  • Functional Training Strategy: Develop our functional training program for vendor management to maximize value realization.

Must Haves

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Procurement, Supply Chain, Data Science, or a related technical field.
  • Experience: 5+ years in Strategic Sourcing, Vendor Management, or Consulting, specifically within high-tech environments.
  • Data Architect Mindset: Expert-level ability to curate complex datasets and develop logical classification frameworks.
  • Strategic Execution: Systems thinker with the ability to distill individual contracts into key strategic pillars.
  • Technical Fluency: Familiarity with the terminology of AI and Data Science to accurately categorize technical services.
  • Computational Domain Literacy: In-depth understanding of the Computational Science market.
  • Adaptability: Quickly adapts to new environments and learns new concepts and tools.
  • Fluency in English: A must.
