Job Opportunity: Senior Underwriter - Onshore Energy

Our client, a leading insurance and investment organization specializing in commercial property and casualty insurance, is seeking a talented Senior Underwriter to join their dynamic Zurich-based team. This role involves close collaboration with counterparts across their European network and in the UK, operating within a matrix structure.

Role Purpose

The primary focus of this position is to write profitable Onshore Energy business in alignment with the underwriting plan. The successful candidate will utilize professional judgment to achieve target premium revenue, generate expected returns on capital, and foster business growth while adhering to established underwriting manuals and compliance regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement the underwriting strategy, portfolio, and customer/channel propositions that optimize local and regional business opportunities while aligning with the company's overall strategy and risk appetite.
  • Support the underwriting community by engaging with this market segment and assisting in executing their business strategies.
  • Authorize and/or make recommendations regarding Onshore Energy and associated risk exposures, recognizing local risk appetites and integrating this into final underwriting decisions.
  • Monitor the marketplace to identify, assess, and make recommendations on underwriting opportunities and threats posed by new and emerging risks.
  • Identify and cultivate opportunities for cross-company cooperation and synergies within the broader organizational offerings.
  • Provide effective oversight and manage underwriting risks in accordance with the agreed policy and risk appetite, reporting findings and making recommendations to management.
  • Develop strong broker and client relationships to maximize business opportunities, scheduling or participating in regular meetings, presentations, and events.
  • While qualified Risk Engineering skills are optional, an understanding of risk interpretation and analysis is required.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you will need significant underwriting experience within the Onshore Energy domain, particularly within the European market (preferably Germany), alongside a thorough understanding of the risk engineering segment. An advanced knowledge of this specific class of business is essential, and you should be comfortable with market wordings, trends, as well as insurance and reinsurance practices. Proven skills in relationship building, communication, influencing, and negotiation are crucial. Strong proficiency in both German and English is required for optimal performance in this role.
